- Author raises some questions concerning the construction of masculinity in Early Christianity against its cultural background. Following a recent proposal by the German New Testament scholar Martin Leutzsch four different approaches can be distinguished. Author focuses on to the letters of the apostle Paul. As one of the most influential and controversial figures of Early Christianity Paul is especially interesting because the letters he wrote between the years 50 and 60 have quite a lot to say about Paul himself and about important aspects of male identity. Author briefly sketches some important Greco-Roman concepts of masculinity. She illustrates the problem of masculinity by a comparison between two rhetorical masters at the turn of the first to the second century: Favorinus of Arles and Polemo of Smyrna.
