- Since the 1980s Chicana writers including Gloria Anzaldúa, Cherríe Moraga, Sandra Cisneros, Ana Castillo, and Alma Luz Villanueva have reworked iconic Mexican cultural symbols such as mother earth goddesses and La Llorona (the Wailing Woman of Mexican folklore), re-imagining them as powerful female figures. After reading the works of Chicana writers who created bold, powerful, and openly sexual female characters, Blake wondered how everyday Mexican American women would characterize their own lives in relation to the writers' radical reconfigurations of female sexuality and gender roles. Blake gathered oral histories from working-class and semiprofessional U.S. Mexicana women. Blake looks at how the Chicana professional intellectuals and the U.S. Mexicana women refigure confining and demeaning constructions of female gender roles and racial, ethnic, and sexual identities.

- Description
- The period 800-1200 saw many changes in attitude towards death, sin and salvation. Visual sources can provide a valuable complement to written sources, often modifying or adding another dimension to what scholars and theologians expressed in words. Taking miniatures showing the Fall of Man and those with personifications of death, this study looks at the ideas they express and the relationship between them. It examines both the general tendencies and specific manuscripts, relating them to their contexts and to the writings of the time. This book shows the shifts in ideas as to what constitutes sin, the merging of eschatological death with sin and a new emphasis on physical death, thereby giving new insights into medieval thought and culture.

- Description
- Bhutan is unique amongst the small group of nations in the Himalayas. It is peaceful and democratic. Above all, it emphasizes happiness that is not necessarily associated with possession of material goods. It protects the environment by eschewing mass tourism that could trample its fragile land. Bhutan is also known for creating the world’s one and only Index of Happiness as a measure of wellbeing for its people, which it prefers over the more materialistic and widely used index of Gross Domestic Product (GDP). In 1990, the Bhutanese government invited Western scientists to conduct research in one of Bhutan’s most remote villages. Bhutan is a country where spirituality is everywhere, where the logic of the animist/Buddhist religion ordains that life is experienced entirely in the present and where human gender is conceived of as part and parcel of the cosmos. The people of Bhutan identify this experience explicitly as “sustainability.”

- Description
- In this anthology SallyAnn H. Ferguson presents a number of important spiritual and autobiographical writings by African American women in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. .Ferguson places the texts in an evolutionary discourse. Women of African descent were subjected to slavery, rape, and ideological derision throughout American history, in part due to deeply ingrained biological imperatives within European American men. Despite this the African-American woman has consciously developed a literary tradition based on fundamental evolutionary principles of mind and body. Authors: Maria W. Stewart (1803-1879): Jarena Lee (1783-?): Harriet E. Adams Wilson (1828?-1863?) : Harriet A. Jacobs (1813-1897): Elizabeth Keckley (1818?-1907): Frances E. Watkins Harper (1824-1911): Charlotte L. - Description
- The author introduces readers to the religious naturalism of the seventeenth-century English philosopher Anne Conway. White shows how Conway's spirituality provides an alternative to the dominant mechanistic models advanced by her leading male contemporaries, especially Descartes. She connects these philosophic impulses to Conway's late religious conversion to Quakerism, arguing that Quaker practical mysticism and its emphasis on equality within the natural order resonate with Conway's philosophic naturalism. White also explores Conway's continuity with and departure from current veins of religious naturalism, which entail an aesthetic ethical mandate seeking the increase of goodness in the world.

- Description
- This examination of convent life paints a portrait of the women who led mostly hidden lives of work and prayer between the late 15th and early 18th centuries. The author tells how nuns of this period engaged in such creative pursuits as writing, music, the visual arts and theater. Some even wrote spirited defenses of their gender, confronting the prevailing view of women as less than men (although at least one of these—Teresa of Ávila—had her words on the subject censored from the published version of The Way of Perfection). Evangelisti also deals with a darker side of convent life: that of women being forced by their families to become nuns because of the few opportunities available to women of that time. She also points out that, for others, becoming a nun was a suitable alternative to marriage.

- In the West, women are abandoning traditional religion. Yet they continue to make up the majority of religious adherents. This volume focuses on this seeming paradox by examining the relationship between gender and secularization: women's place in and out of Christianity and in alternative spiritualities and Islam: how questions of secularization differ between faith systems.

- This work postulates a new relationship between Carl Jung and Luce Irigaray. Several connections are developed between the philosophical and psychological work of both thinkers. Gray argues that there is a relationship between them that can be thought of in terms of Hegel's Master/Slave dialectic. She suggests that Irigaray's conception of the feminine is a critical re-visioning of the open-ended possibilities for human beings expressed in Jung's idea of individuation. Other subjects discussed in this book are: mimesis, essentialism, and the divine.

- The concept of transcendence is emerging as a central category of critical thought. This collection brings together scholars to ask whether we can re-conceive the category of transcendence from a feminist perspective, taking into account ethics, women’s subjectivity, (sexed) embodiment, and differing models for spirituality. The collection begins with a essay by Luce Irigaray, with whose work the majority of contributions engage. Contributors develop these themes both philosophically and within the contexts of Judaism, Islam, and Christianity.
