- Description
- Drawing upon research in gender studies, religion, ritual theory, anthropology, archaeology, and art history, this book investigates the ways in which the religious lives and ritual practices of women in Greek and Roman antiquity helped shape their social and civic identity. Barred from participating in many public arenas, women asserted their presence by performing rituals at festivals and presiding over rites associated with life passages and healing. The essays in this lively and timely volume reveal the central place of women in the religious and ritual practices of the societies of the ancient Mediterranean.

- Description
- Bessie Head's writing illustrates a fusion of styles, subjects and philosophical and literary influences. This book explores this range by drawing both on postcolonial and feminist theories. Focusing on Head's acute sensitivity to social and historical experiences, the book deals with Head's use of myths and trans-cultural fictions that convey knowledge about her immediate world and the historical domains beyond it. In addition, Bessie Head's autobiographical vision generates an exploration of personal injustices as well as the processes they signal. Hinduism and eastern philosophy were central to Head's philosophical vision, and the book shows how this vision allowed her to explore existential questions and spiritual concerns in innovative and unexpected ways. By using language auto-referentially and symbolically, by drawing on myths and by developing abundantly textured metaphors, Head produces fictions that manifest the notions of freedom and serenity she urgently endorses, and that are as concerned with challenging the realities she confronts as they are with utopian imagining.

- Charismatic Christianity is the most recent and fastest growing expression of Pentecostal religion in Sub-Saharan Africa. In Ghana's capital, Accra, the charismatic churches dominate the religious scene. This book focuses on the gender discourses of Ghana's new churches, and considers charismatic perspectives on womanhood, manhood, marriage and family life. Offering a perspective on the organisational structures of the charismatic churches, this study looks at the leadership roles of female pastors and pastors' wives, and draws attention to the links between female leaders and spiritual power. By highlighting the importance of spiritual power in interpreting gendered social change, the book sheds new light on the socio-cultural role of Ghana's new churches.

- A popular new image of Witches has arisen in recent years, due largely to popular movies and television. Here, young sexy Witches use magic and Witchcraft to gain control over their lives and fight evil. Then there is the depiction in the Harry Potter books: Witchcraft is a gift that unenlightened everyday people lack. In both types of portrayals, being a Witch is akin to being a superhero. At the other end of the spectrum, wary adults assume that Witches engage in evil practices that are misguided at best and dangerous at worst. Yet, as Berger and Ezzy show in this book the reality of their practices, beliefs, values, and motivations is very different from the sensational depictions we see in popular culture.

- Description
- Divine Love explores the work of Luce Irigaray. Her work stands at the intersection of contemporary debates concerned with culture, gender and religion, but her ideas have not yet been presented in a comprehensive way from the perspective of Religious Studies. This book tries to examine the development of religious themes from Irigaray’s initial work, Speculum of the Other Woman, where she rejects traditional forms of western religions, to her more recent explorations of eastern religions. Irigaray’s ideas on love, the divine, an ethics of sexual difference, and normative heterosexuality are analysed. These analyses are placed in the context of the reception of Irigaray’s work by secular feminists such as Judith Butler, Drucilla Cornell and Elizabeth Grosz, as well as by feminists in Religious Studies such as Pamela Sue Anderson, Ellen Armour, Amy Hollywood and Grace Jantzen. Finally, Irigaray’s own spiritual path, which has been influenced by eastern religions is evaluated in the light of recent theoretical developments in orientalism and postcolonialism.

- Church of God in Christ (COGIC), an African American Pentecostal denomination founded in 1896, has become the largest Pentecostal denomination in the United States today. In this study of the church Butler examines the religious and social lives of the women in the COGIC Women's Department from its founding in 1911 through the mid-1960s. She finds that the sanctification, or spiritual purity, that these women sought earned them social power both in the church and in the black community.

- Description
- This volume of essays analyzes recent works by contemporary women writers whose characters’ midlife and later life changes are mapped in their narratives. Rather than focusing on the painful losses undergone by women of a certain age, recent narratives explore a kind of adventure of aging, one that is spiritual in nature, enabling new ways of being and becoming, but open-ended and capable of great variation in practice. In particular, these journeys of the spirit focus on the retrospective movement undergone by a midlife or older woman as she is led by inner or outer forces to assess where she has come from and decipher a shape or pattern to her journey. The essays in this book employ a wide variety of critical lenses to chart these adventures, including archetypal, Sufi, post-colonial, and feminist analysis: archival research: aboriginal life writing: and trauma theory. These studies bring a new understanding to women’s adventure of age in both literary texts and in life.

- Many early modern writers left accounts of their spiritual sufferings and convictions which deal in extremes of emotion and behavior--some identified by their contemporaries as mad, to be treated with medication, counseling, and confinement. Their writings give us a window into the hidden world of early modern madness from the point of view of the mad. How is madness experienced and treated, and how can it be recorded? How do religion, gender, and class inflect the processes of diagnosis and treatment? And what insights can the stories these writers tell give us into early modern culture?

- Biernacki presents a view on tantra, in which women are revered, worshipped and considered worthy of spiritual attainment. Based on an analysis of eight tantric texts written in Sanskrit from the 15th through the 18th century she focuses on four topics: the 'Kali Practice' in which women appear not only as objects of reverence but as practitioners and gurus: the Tantric sex rite, especially in the case that the preference is for wives as ritual consorts: feminine language and the gendered implications of mantra: images of male violence towards women in tantric myths.
