- Description
- The authors revisit women, first interviewed a decade earlier in Pamela Stone’s book 'Opting Out? Why Women Really Quit Careers and Head Home' about taking a career break of high-level jobs to raise children. They talk about the challenges when they return to work. Most succeed, but not in their former white-collar jobs due to the lack of flexibility in hours, but in lower-paid jobs in the gig economy or predominantly female nonprofit sector. An account of the consequences for women seeking to strike a work/life balance, how women can reinvent their careers, and the policy reforms needed in the upper strata of the labour market where patriarchy and capitalism operates.

- Description
- Why are women such prominent workers in the global marketplace? Why do so many perform jobs that involve carework? What political forces have made these women key participants in globalization? What are the consequences for the women themselves, for their families, and for societies and international relations in general? .This book offers an examination of globalization, examining the lives of the women at the center of these new global dynamics. Arguing that society is facing multiple crises of care, the authors develop a new framework for understanding the interplay of globalization, gender, and carework. In four original essays, they examine gender, race, and class inequality: migration, citizenship, and the politics of social control: the evolving meanings of motherhood: and new social definitions of carework and the personal transformation of careworkers. Excerpts from the classic works in the field as well as recent cutting-edge research studies support the examination of each of these growing global crises.

- Watts considers the ways in which gender impacts upon health in all its elements including access, technology, professionalisation, health promotion and health as an important sector of the labour market. She discusses gender as a developing and diversified category, exploring ideas about masculinity and the fluidity of gender boundaries in determining individual identity.Chapters that follow discuss ideology of gender and health and the dominant ideological association between femaleness and caring: working for health with particular focus on the gendered interplay of caring and curing roles: technology and changes to gender and healthcare: health promotion as a gendered activity and the importance of introducing an intersectional approach beyond gender to articulate a deeper understanding of health in a postmodern context.

- When Slaughter accepted her dream job as the first female director of policy planning at the U.S. State Department in 2009, she was confident she could juggle the demands of her position in Washington, D.C., with the responsibilities of her family life in suburban New Jersey. Her husband and two young sons encouraged her to pursue the job: she had a tremendously supportive boss, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. But then life intervened. Parenting needs caused her to make a decision to leave the State Department and return to an academic career that gave her more time for her family. The reactions to her choice to leave Washington because of her kids led her to question the feminist narrative she grew up with. Her subsequent article for The Atlantic, “Why Women Still Can’t Have It All,” created a firestorm, sparked intense national debate, and became one of the most-read pieces in the magazine’s history. .In this book Slaughter returns with her vision for what true equality between men and women really means, and how we can get there. She uncovers the missing piece of the puzzle, presenting a new focus that can reunite the women’s movement and provide a common banner under which both men and women can advance and thrive.

- Description
- This book presents a systematic account of dependency care in a liberal theory of justice. Receiving dependency care is necessary for human survival, but the practices with which we meet society’s care needs are seldom recognized for their functional role. Norms about gender and race obscure and shape expectations about whose needs for care are legitimate as well as about whose caregiving labor more advantaged members of society will receive. Bhandary develops a form of social contract theory with which to evaluate society’s caregiving arrangements. Building on work by feminist liberals and care ethicists, it reframes debates about care to move beyond gender with an inequality-tracking framework that can be employed in any culture.

- Rottenberg maintains that because neoliberalism reduces everything to market calculations it needs feminism in order to 'solve' issues related to reproduction and care. She shows how women of color and poor and immigrant women most often serve as the unacknowledged care-workers who enable professional women to strive toward balance, arguing that neoliberal feminism legitimates the exploitation of the majority of women while disarticulating any kind of structural critique.

- This book explores the human geographies of skilled migration, specifically the practices, dispositions, relationships and resources of professional women who participate in the global care industry. Drawing on interviews with migrant women carers and experts in the fields of labor, care and migration, the book address three major questions: Why do professional women migrate for jobs for which they are overqualified? What strategies do they use to cope with their decisions? And what are the outcomes of their actions in terms of their social and economic integration with the host country?
