- Description
- This book examines the history of women's bookstores in the US from the 1970s to the 1990s. 'Women's bookstores' refers to bookstores operated by and for women. Such bookstores emerged out of the second women's movement as well as the lesbian and gay rights movement. This book establishes that women's bookstores played an important role in feminism by enabling the dissemination of women's voices and thereby helping to sustain and enrich the women's movement. The crucial step toward the development of women's bookstores started with the first national Women In Print Conference in 1976. As an important part of the feminist publishing community, it gathered strength centered around the periodical Feminist Bookstore News.

- Description
- The transformations seen in women's active citizenship in Central and Eastern Europe mirror the social political and economic transformations in the region since the fall of communism at the end of the 1980s. .This book challenges the universal notion of 'citizenship' by focusing on the diversity of situations women in this region have found themselves in since the end of the 1980s, looking at the challenges and struggles they have faced to assert themselves as citizens and their citizenship rights.

- Description
- After thirty years of military rule and state-sponsored violence, Guatemala reinstated civilian control and began rebuilding democratic institutions in 1986. Guatemalan women began organizing to gain an active role in the national body politic and restructure traditional relations of power and gender. This study examines the formation and evolution of the Guatemalan women's movement and assesses how it has been affected by, and has in turn affected, the forces of democratization and globalization that have transformed much of the developing world. .She asserts that, while the influences of dominant global discourses are apparent, local definitions of femininity, sexuality, and gender equity and rights have been critical to shaping the form, content, and objectives of the women's movement in Guatemala. And she identifies a counter-discourse to globalization that is slowly emerging within the movement. Berger's findings vigorously reveal the manifold complexities that have attended the development of the Guatemalan women's movement.

- Description
- This book addresses the veiled role of Jewishness in the understanding of feminist (visual) art in the United States. Lisa Bloom situates the art practices of Jewish feminist artists from the 1970s to the present, from New York City to southern California, in relation to wider cultural and historical issues behind the reticence on the topic of Jewish identities in the visual arts. The artists studied in this book include Eleanor Antin, Judy Chicago, Deborah Kass, Rhonda Lieberman, and Martha Rosler, amongst many others.
