- Description
- This publication highlights how, from the 16th to the 19th centuries, European women, as readers and writers, contributed to the construction of national identities. The book, which presents twenty countries, is divided into four parts. First, it examines how women belonged to nations: they represented territories and political or religious communities in their own style. Second, it deals with the ways in which women wrote the nation: the network of relationships in which they were involved that were not necessarily national or territorial. The legitimation that women writers succeeded in finding is emphasised in the third section, while in the fourth is analysed how and why women were open to the outside world, beyond the country's borders.

- Description
- Within the gender studies binaries like female versus male and gay versus straight have been problematized as a symbol of the stigmatization and erasure of non-normative subjects and practices. This volume offers different perspectives on both these binaries and other dichotomies that penetrate the gendered and sexual lives of speakers. Several chapters focus on the limiting or misleading qualities of analyses of binaries, while others suggest that binaries are a crucial component of social meaning within particular communities of study. The book advocates for a re-theorization of the binary that provides more complex and contextually-grounded engagement with speakers' own orientations to dichotomous systems. Finally, it is argued that researchers must be careful to avoid the assumption that our own preconceptions about binary social structures will be shared by the communities we study.

- This collection of articles illuminates the ways in which the concept of female deviance is represented, re-inscribed and refigured in a wide range of texts across time, cultures and genres. The choice of variety shows that representations of deviance accommodate meaning-making spaces and possibilities for resistance in different socio-cultural and literary contexts. The construct of the deviant woman is analysed from literary, sociolinguistic and historical-cultural perspectives, revealing insights about cultures and societies. Furthermore, the studies recognise and explain the significance of the concept of deviance in relation to gender that bespeaks a contemporary cultural concern about narratives of femininity.

- Feminist scholars have demonstrated how dominant discourses frequently reflect patriarchal influence, thereby distorting and depoliticizing women’s storying of their own lives. In this volume researchers provide an examination of women’s attempts to counter-story their lives when prevailing discourses are harmful. As such, it is an exploration of women’s agency and resistance, which highlights the challenges and complexities of such discursive work. The chapters explore women’s resistance across a wide range of experiences, including: intimate partner violence, casual sex, depression, premenstrual change, disordered eating, lesbian identity, women’s work in male-dominated spaces, rape, and child birth.

- Description
- This book examines the issues and controversies that are debated when it comes to the concept of feminism and gender in Arab society today. It offers explorations of the theoretical issues, the latest developments of feminist discourse, literary studies and sociology, as well as empirical data concerning the situation of women in Arab countries, such as Iraq and Palestine. Iin many countries of the Arab World- particularly Palestine, Iraq and Lebanon, as well as Sudan- issues of war, civil conflict, military occupation and imperialism often override those of gender. The place of feminism in this context is extremely problematic, as nationalist, religious and class interests supersede feminism as a public concern, even among many women. Arab feminists are thus either co-opted by these interests or find themselves in the frustrating position of negotiating their way through a minefield of contradictory imperatives and loyalties.

Throughout the book, the authors engage with intersections of gender and gender non-conformity, race, sexuality, disability, and species.

- This book asks-and answers-big questions. Why are millions of women financially vulnerable when others have made such great progress? Why are millions of women struggling to make ends meet even though they are hard at work? What is it about our nation-government, business, family, and even women themselves-that drives women to the financial brink? To answer these questions, three major cultural and economic changes over the past 50 years are examined in detail: Women work more outside the home, but still earn less than men. Women lead more families on their own. Women today need higher education to enter the middle class.

- This book focuses on the gendered dimensions of reality television. Through close readings of a wide range of reality programming, from Sister Wives to Ghost Adventures and Deadliest Warrior, the contributors think through questions of femininity and masculinity, as they relate to the intersections of gender, race, class, and sexuality. They connect the genre's combination of real people and surreal experiences, of authenticity and artifice, to the production of identity and norms of citizenship, the commodification of selfhood, and the naturalization of regimes of power. Whether portrayals of hoarders, or big-family programs such as 19 Kids and Counting, the contributors analyze reality television as a relevant site for the production and performance of gender.

- With the emergence of popular culture phenomena such as reality television, blogging, and social networking sites, it is important to examine the representation of Black women and the potential implications of those images, messages, and roles. This collection features research from scholars interested in the relationship among media, society, perceptions, and Black women. The book serves as a compilation of “hot topics” including ABC’s Scandal, Beyoncé’s Visual Album, and Oprah’s Instagram page. Other themes have roots in reality television, film, and hip hop, as well as issues of gender politics, domestic violence, and colorism. The discussion also extends to the presentation and inclusion of Black women in advertising, print, and digital media.
