- Description
- Looking forward to the 100-year anniversary of the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment, this collection of essays looks back at the decades since women won the right to vote to analyze the changes, developments, and even continuities in women's roles in the broad political sphere. Ultimately, the book asks two questions about the last 100 years of women's suffrage: How did the Nineteenth Amendment alter the American political system? and How has women's engagement in politics changed over the last 100 years?

- Description
- Taking an interdisciplinary approach, this book analyses black women’s involvement in American political life, focusing on what they did to gain political power between 1961 and the present, and why, in many cases, they did not succeed. The author demonstrates that black women have tried to gain centrality through their participation in Presidential Commissions, Black feminist organizations, theatrical productions, film adaptations of literature, beauty pageants, electoral politics, and Presidential appointments.

- Description
- Phyllis Chesler was a pioneer of Second Wave Feminism. Chesler and the women who came out between 1972-1975 brought class action lawsuits on behalf of economic discrimination, opened rape crisis lines and shelters for battered women, held marches and sit-ins for abortion and equal rights. They began the first-ever national and international public conversations about birth control and abortion, sexual harassment, violence against women, female orgasm, and a woman’s right to kill in self-defense. The feminist movement has changed over the years, but Chesler knew some of its first pioneers, including Gloria Steinem, Kate Millett and Andrea Dworkin. Some had been viewed as whores, witches, and madwomen, but were changing the world and becoming major players in history.

- Description
- Kristan Poirot demonstrates that contemporary theories about sex, gender, identity, and difference compel a rethinking of the history of feminist movements and their rhetorical practices. .Poirot focuses on five case studies : the circulation of Sojourner Truth's 'Ain't I a Woman?' in early and contemporary feminist contexts: the visual rhetorics of the feminist self-help health movement: the public discourse of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and early nineteenth-century ideas about suffrage, sex, and race: the conflicts over lesbian sexuality in the 1960s and 1970s: and the discourse that surrounds twenty-first-century SlutWalks. In the process, Poirot rethinks the terms through which we understand U.S. feminist movements to explore the ways feminism has questioned sexed distinctions and practices over time.

- Description
- This book describes what hip hop culture has 'inherited' from the Harlem Renaissance, the Black Arts movement, the Feminist Art movement, and 1980s and 1990s postmodern aesthetics. By comparing and contrasting the major motifs of the cultural aesthetic traditions with those of hip hop culture, all the while critically exploring the origins and evolution of black popular culture from antebellum America through to 'Obama's America', the book demonstrates that the Hip Hop generation is not the first generation of young black folk preoccupied with spirituality and sexuality, race and religion, entertainment and athletics, or ghetto culture and bourgeois culture.

- Description
- The essays in this book represent a cross-section of current research in the field of women's history with an intersectional approach. This collection employs approaches to study both the causes that have united American women and the conflicts that have divided them. Some essays uncover little-known aspects of women’s history, while others offer a fresh take on familiar events and figures, from Rosa Parks to Take Back the Night marches. Spanning the antebellum era to the present day, these essays convey the long histories and ongoing relevance of topics ranging from women’s immigration to incarceration, from acts of cross-dressing to the activism of feminist mothers.

- Description
- This book engages current scholarship on women in Texas, the South, and the United States. It provides insights into Texas’s geographic position, bordering on the West and sharing a history with Mexico, while analyzing the ways in which Texas stories mirror a larger American narrative. The biographies and essays illustrate a diversity among Texas women, reflecting experiences ranging from those of dispossessed enslaved women to wealthy patrons of the arts. That history also captures the ways in which women’s lives reflect both personal autonomy and opportunities to engage in the public sphere.

- Description
- This book portrays pioneering black women activists from the early twentieth century through the 1970s, focusing on their participation in the U.S. Communist Party (CPUSA) between 1919 and 1956. Erik S. McDuffie considers how women from diverse locales and backgrounds became radicalized, joined the CPUSA, and advocated a pathbreaking politics committed to black liberation, women’s rights, decolonization, economic justice, peace, and international solidarity. McDuffie explores the lives of black left feminists. Drawing on more than forty oral histories collected from veteran black women radicals and their family members, McDuffie examines how these women negotiated race, gender, class, sexuality, and politics within the CPUSA. In Sojourning for Freedom, he depicts a community of radical black women activist intellectuals who helped to lay the foundation for a transnational modern black feminism.

- This reader examines the ways in which work influences our roles in both the public and private spheres. Goodman has selected a key set of essays that examine influential arguments on such themes as the origins of the gendered division of labor: historical trends and economic transformations that affect and are affected by women's position in market and non-market work: the effects of occupational and job segregation by sex on status, pay, and promotion: the ways in which formal and informal organizational culture shape and in turn are shaped by gender in professional and managerial positions: class consciousness among wage-earning men and women: the different forms of gender discrimination that women and men face in the workplace: the problems working parents face and the ways in which different societies, subcultures and genders cope: and alternative approaches to improving the lives of working women and their families in the global economy.

- Description
- This book narrates the development of the new companionate marriage ideal, which took hold in the early twentieth century and prevailed in American society by the 1940s. The first challenges to discuss sexual relations between husbands and wives came from social hygiene reformers, who advocated for a sex education to combat prostitution and venereal disease. A more radical group of feminists, anarchists, and bohemians opposed the Victorian model of marriage and even the institution of marriage. Birth control advocates such as Emma Goldman and Margaret Sanger openly championed women's rights to acquire and use effective contraception. The 'companionate marriage' emerged from these efforts. This marital ideal was characterized by greater emotional and sexuality intimacy for both men and women, use of birth control to create smaller families, and destigmatization of divorce in cases of failed unions. Simmons examines what she calls the 'flapper' marriage, in which free-spirited young wives enjoyed the early years of marriage, postponing children and domesticity. She looks at the feminist marriage in which women imagined greater equality between the sexes in domestic and paid work and sex. And she explores the African American 'partnership marriage,' which often included wives' employment and drew more heavily on the involvement of the community and extended family.
