- Description
- In this essay the author investigates an underexplored outlet for the self-fashioning of creative women: portraits, painted by other women, that depict actresses in performance. Like the actresses’ houses that were both homes and stages, the portraits of actresses in their signature roles fused their multiple identities into a construct that celebrated them as performers and as women. Furthermore, the collaborations that these portraits entailed helped to weave a close-knit social network of women artists across theater and the visual arts. ?????????????????????????

- Description
- The only woman to contribute regularly to the Correspondance littéraire was Louise d’Épinay, who assisted both directors for almost thirty years from 1755 to 1783. In this essay, the author argues that Mme ***’s anonymous presence in the Correspondance littéraire helped founder and first director Grimm to establish his reputation through her appealing representation of the worldly French society to which he belonged, and to create an ideal community in which Parisian philosophers and foreign nobles could communicate freely.

- Description
- Countess Fanny de Beauharnais (1737–1813) was among the first to distinguish herself as both a socialite and a prolific author. She did not see her writing practice as a pastime, but as a significant part of her social identity, which influenced her vision of women’s role in high society and the stakes associated with attendance at her salon. To understand the specificity of that position, the author analyzes the relationships between the countess and a group of poètes légers (light poets), headed by Claude-Joseph Dorat (1734–1780), who frequented her salon from about 1770 to 1780. De Beauharnais’s circle operated on symbolic trade: in return for the countess’s support, the school of Dorat helped construct her image as author.
