Since the economic and political collapse of former Yugoslavia, Republic of Montenegro suffered the loss of more than half of the economic power it had. Montenegro is currently part of the state union of Serbia and Montenegro. The position of women in Montenegro has improved since 1945, when on basis of the Constitution women became equal to men and got their right to vote. But the past ten years the social position of women deteriorated significantly.
The agenda at the G8 Summit in 2006 was global energy security, the fight against infectious diseases and education. All these focus areas have implications for the realization of women's rights, although the G8's primary objectives may not have much to do with the universal realization of human rights.
