- Description
- From the days of the fur trade through the contemporary period, women have played important roles in the public life of Canada. Until the 1970s, however, these contributions were generally overlooked. This book looks at the progress made in the last forty years to raise the profile of women's involvement in public life. .The contributors focus on two questions with reference to community activism, the politics of feminist organizing, parties and elections, and the communications environment in which politicians operate. First, are the doors to participation presently open wider than they were in the past? What obstacles as well as possibilities face specific groups of female citizens? Have patterns of media coverage shifted such that women can expect to engage in community groups and party organizations on something approaching an even playing field? Second, how can these doors be opened wider, both in terms of real-world participation and our scholarly understanding of public engagement? What remedies have been proposed? What research directions need to be pursued?

- Description
- Though the proportion of women in national assemblies still barely scrapes 16% on average, the striking outliers – Rwanda with 49% of its assembly female, Argentina with 35%, Liberia and Chile with new women presidents this year – have raised expectations that there is an upward trend in women’s representation from which we may expect big changes in the quality of governance. But getting women into public office is just the first step in the challenge of creating governance and accountability systems that respond to women’s needs and protect their rights. Using case studies from around the world, the essays in this volume consider the conditions for effective connections between women in civil society and women in politics, for the evolution of political party platforms responsive to women’s interests, for local government arrangements that enable women to engage effectively, and for accountability mechanisms that answer to women.

- Description
- The twentieth century was a time of transformation in the roles of American women. Women have always worked and raised families, but the world opened up to them with new opportunities to participate fully in society, from voting, to controlling their reproductive cycle, to running a big company. Each chapter covers a crucial topic in women's lives and encapsulates the twentieth-century growth and changes: women's participation in the workforce, the developing role of women and the family, taking into consideration consumerism and feminism: women and pop culture and the arts-their roles as creators and subjects: education from the early century's access to higher education until today's female hyperachiever: women and government, from winning the vote through the battle for the Equal Rights Amendment, to Women's Lib, and public office holding: women and the law, their rights, their use of the law, their practice of it, and court cases affecting them: women and religious participation and roles in various denominations. An historical introduction, timeline, photos, and selected bibliography round out the coverage.
