- Since the 1980s Chicana writers including Gloria Anzaldúa, Cherríe Moraga, Sandra Cisneros, Ana Castillo, and Alma Luz Villanueva have reworked iconic Mexican cultural symbols such as mother earth goddesses and La Llorona (the Wailing Woman of Mexican folklore), re-imagining them as powerful female figures. After reading the works of Chicana writers who created bold, powerful, and openly sexual female characters, Blake wondered how everyday Mexican American women would characterize their own lives in relation to the writers' radical reconfigurations of female sexuality and gender roles. Blake gathered oral histories from working-class and semiprofessional U.S. Mexicana women. Blake looks at how the Chicana professional intellectuals and the U.S. Mexicana women refigure confining and demeaning constructions of female gender roles and racial, ethnic, and sexual identities.

- Description
- The period 800-1200 saw many changes in attitude towards death, sin and salvation. Visual sources can provide a valuable complement to written sources, often modifying or adding another dimension to what scholars and theologians expressed in words. Taking miniatures showing the Fall of Man and those with personifications of death, this study looks at the ideas they express and the relationship between them. It examines both the general tendencies and specific manuscripts, relating them to their contexts and to the writings of the time. This book shows the shifts in ideas as to what constitutes sin, the merging of eschatological death with sin and a new emphasis on physical death, thereby giving new insights into medieval thought and culture.

- Description
- Bhutan is unique amongst the small group of nations in the Himalayas. It is peaceful and democratic. Above all, it emphasizes happiness that is not necessarily associated with possession of material goods. It protects the environment by eschewing mass tourism that could trample its fragile land. Bhutan is also known for creating the world’s one and only Index of Happiness as a measure of wellbeing for its people, which it prefers over the more materialistic and widely used index of Gross Domestic Product (GDP). In 1990, the Bhutanese government invited Western scientists to conduct research in one of Bhutan’s most remote villages. Bhutan is a country where spirituality is everywhere, where the logic of the animist/Buddhist religion ordains that life is experienced entirely in the present and where human gender is conceived of as part and parcel of the cosmos. The people of Bhutan identify this experience explicitly as “sustainability.”

- Description
- In this anthology SallyAnn H. Ferguson presents a number of important spiritual and autobiographical writings by African American women in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. .Ferguson places the texts in an evolutionary discourse. Women of African descent were subjected to slavery, rape, and ideological derision throughout American history, in part due to deeply ingrained biological imperatives within European American men. Despite this the African-American woman has consciously developed a literary tradition based on fundamental evolutionary principles of mind and body. Authors: Maria W. Stewart (1803-1879): Jarena Lee (1783-?): Harriet E. Adams Wilson (1828?-1863?) : Harriet A. Jacobs (1813-1897): Elizabeth Keckley (1818?-1907): Frances E. Watkins Harper (1824-1911): Charlotte L. Forten Grimké (1837-1914): Anna Julia Cooper (1858-1964): Ida B. Wells-Barnett (1862-1931): Angelina Weld Grimké (1880-1958)

- Description
- The author introduces readers to the religious naturalism of the seventeenth-century English philosopher Anne Conway. White shows how Conway's spirituality provides an alternative to the dominant mechanistic models advanced by her leading male contemporaries, especially Descartes. She connects these philosophic impulses to Conway's late religious conversion to Quakerism, arguing that Quaker practical mysticism and its emphasis on equality within the natural order resonate with Conway's philosophic naturalism. White also explores Conway's continuity with and departure from current veins of religious naturalism, which entail an aesthetic ethical mandate seeking the increase of goodness in the world.
