- Description
- Gender-based violence affects every society in the world, and represents a significant impediment to development. Anyone can be a victim of violence on the grounds of their gender identity, but it is predominantly women and girls whose lives are limited by its effects. This volume explores the wide variety of forms that gender-based violence can take, including violence that occurs within marriage, during fuel collection and forced evictions, and at school, and the impact that this violence can have on the capacity of victims to support themselves and enjoy their full rights as human beings. The authors also present examples of successful policy, ranging from lobbying for better legal and police protection for victims, to working with men and boys to combat the underlying gender stereotypes and expectations which legitimize gender-based violence against women.

- Description
- This book presents an interdisciplinary approach to an aspect of Gothic texts, films, and music: that of rewriting. From the eighteenth-century Gothic novel to present-day vampire films and Goth music, the genre is characterised by its nostalgic reflection on past worlds, narratives, and identities. Gothic nostalgia is often accompanied by a transgressive drive, resulting in perversions of the rewritten past—the modern vampire is no longer embodied evil but an attractive dandy, while Goth subcultures reflect on Victorian aesthetics but pervert them by adding fetishist elements. This book brings together the early Gothic novel, present-day female and black Gothic literature, Goth subculture and music, and the imagery of horror films and comic books, thus broadening the definition of ‘Gothic’ from a literary genre to a gesture of pervasive cultural criticism.

- Description
- By the mid 1990s, most western states, responding to the challenge of women's movements, had developed 'state feminism': institutions and policy measures to achieve gender equality. These developments have since been challenged by major political changes over the last decade, such as the increasing importance of the European Union and the United Nations, regionalization and decentralization, reforms of the welfare state and government and the introduction of gender mainstreaming. Women's policy institutions were also confronted with increasing diversity amongst women and amongst women's movements. This book analyses how these institutions in twelve western democracies have responded to the changes: Austria, Australia, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and the United States. Were they able to maintain or enhance their roles or were they downsized? What was their relationship with women's movements groups? And why did some fare well and others lose out over the last decade?
