- Description
- The essays explore how women seized opportunities created by modernization efforts and revolutionary upheaval to challenge conventions of sexuality, work, family life, religious practices, and civil rights. Concentrating on episodes and phenomena that occurred between 1915 and 1950, the contributors describe experiences ranging from those of a transgendered Zapatista soldier to upright damas católicas and Mexico City’s chicas modernas pilloried by the press and male students. Women refashioned their lives by seeking relief from bad marriages through divorce courts and preparing for new employment opportunities through vocational education. Activists ranging from Catholics to Communists mobilized for political and social rights.

- Description
- Marso explores the lives and theory of Mary Wollstonecraft, Germaine de Staël, Emma Goldman, and Simone de Beauvoir in light of and alongside contemporary feminist work, to examine the significance that being a woman and the material conditions of femininity thrust upon one based on the times in which one lives had on their lives and work. These historical women are often valorized as thinkers and intellectuals, whose private lives are deemed irrelevant at best, and degrading as worst, or are the subjects of biographies that ignore their political contributions. .Marso uses the memoirs left by these women to explore how they criticized the constraints of femininity while simultaneously living within them. Finally, Marso explores a few memoirs of contemporary feminist thinkers to show that contemporary feminists struggle withthe same difficulties encountered by the women who came before.

- Description
- With this study Claudia Thorun has made a contribution in an innovative area of research. Her interdisciplinary approach offers insights and directions for theatre studies, for culturally oriented gender studies, and for the historiography of the theatre. Sarah Bernhardt - praised as the ‘queen of the theatre’, feared as the ‘sacred monster’, decried as a ‘publicity seeker’ - was an actress celebrated throughout the world and one of the first international stars. In the late 19th century the French actress embodied contemporary images of femininity such as the New Woman, the virtuous courtesan and the man-eating femme fatale. Sarah Bernhardt’s image as a star and the discourse about her as a star formed the basis for discussion of important social developments of the fin de siècle, in particular the cracks and changes in perceptions of gender.

- Description
- The Arthurian legend lives on as powerfully and enduringly as ever. There is an aspect to this myth which has been neglected, but which is perhaps its most potent part of all. For central to the Arthurian stories are the mysterious, sexually alluring enchantresses, those mistresses of magic who wield extraordinary influence over Arthur's life and destiny, bestriding the Camelot mythology with a dark, brooding presence. Echoing the search for the Grail, Carolyne Larrington takes her readers on a quest of her own - to discover why these dangerous women continue to bewitch us. Her journey takes in the enchantresses as they appear in poetry and painting, on the Internet and TV, in high culture and popular culture. She shows that whether they be chaste or depraved, necrophiliacs or virgins, the Arthurian enchantresses are manifestations of the feared, uncontainable Other, frightening and fascinating in equal measure.

- Description
- This publication takes note of a proliferation of phallic feminine figures in disparate North American and European texts from the end of the nineteenth century onward. Brooks takes up the textual figure of the phallic woman where Freud locates it, in the imagined mother that the little boy, in fantasy, credits with a penis of her own. It traces this phallic-woman motif backward to the sexological case study, and forward to newspaper accounts of testosterone-taking third-sexers. Brooks examines both high and low literature, pornography, postmodern theory, and writing that would seem to answer Lacan's injunction to move 'beyond the phallus'.
