- Description
- Britain witnessed huge changes between 1700 and 1850, as society adapted to unrecedented urbanization, commercialization, industrialization, imperial expansion and much more. this volume looks specifically at British women's experiences in the context of these major social, economic and cultural shifts. The chapters speak not of one overarching female historical experience, but of many experiences, of significant long-term continuities and of complex developments and changes. They speak, in particular, of tensions and opportunities, as notions of women and their place in society were examined and debated, and boundaries were extended or redrawn.

- Description
- This anthology reorients the field of domestic violence research by bringing long-overdue attention to the structural forms of oppression in communities marginalized by race, ethnicity, religion, sexuality, or social class. .Reprints of the most influential recent work in the field as well as more than a dozen newly commissioned essays explore theoretical issues, current research, service provision, and activism among Latinos, African Americans, Asian Americans, Jewish Americans, and lesbians. The volume rejects simplistic analyses of the role of culture in domestic violence by elucidating the support systems available to battered women within different cultures, while at the same time addressing the distinct problems generated by that culture. Together, the essays pose a compelling challenge to stereotypical images of battered women that are racist, homophobic, and xenophobic.

- Description
- The story of the Renaissance has usually been told through the elite male perspective. In this book, the lives of women and girls from a wide range of classes, religions, and countries in Europe take center stage. Women had a significant impact on the economy, social structures, and the culture of the Renaissance, despite the constraints on their exercise of power, lack of opportunities, enforced dependence, and exclusion from politics, government, science, law, banking, and more. The authors examine the attitudes and practices that shaped the varied roles of women then, but also the important ways women shaped the world in which they lived. The focus is on both the ideas that circulated about women and on the difference between representations of them and their everyday life experiences.

- Description
- This new edition of Women's Realities, Women's Choices introduces readers to the field of women's studies by examining the contradictions between social and cultural 'givens' and the realities that women face in society. Written collectively by nine authors from as many fields and disciplines, the book acknowledges the gap between women's realities and their choices--and both analyzes that gap and looks at ways to bridge it. Boxes and pictures contain new information. The book also highlights the impact of the post-Soviet world and economic globalization on women's lives, as well as the feminist issues of the 1990s and early twenty-first century. Chapter references have been updated to include not only films but also web sites.

They were part of the liberation movement, but after the political changes in 1994 they asked for women's rights in the new constitution. - Description
- This book offers a study of biblical texts on menstruation and childbirth in the light of their ancient Near Eastern background. Close reading of the biblical texts, based on classical and feminist biblical interpretation, and supported by comparative study of ancient Near Eastern sources and anthropology, reveals a varied picture of these female events. Fertility and impurity are closely connected to menstruation and childbirth, but their place and importance are different in priestly and nonpriestly writings of the Bible, which are therefore separately dealt with.
