- Description
- In this study Bolt sheds light on the differences in the area of race, class and internationalism, which flourished in an era of political reaction, economic insecurity, polarising nationalism and resurgent anti-feminism. The author reveals how the conflicts were seized upon and publicised by contemporaries, and how the activists themselves were forced to confront the increasingly complex tensions. in particular, the American and british women's movements grew further apart as British women became more conscious of American money, expectation of influence and opposition to the existence of Britain's empire.

- Description
- This book examines the contemporary feminist movement in Singapore through an in-depth case study of the locally-based Association of Women for Action and Research (AWARE). It examines the meanings attached to feminist activism by AWARE members, including the use of the label 'feminist' as a self-identifier by both individuals as well as the organisation as a whole. By exploring the range of activities that AWARE has been involved in since the mid-1980s, the text describes in detail the fraught relationship between feminism and the state in Singapore. The author uses the framework of transnational feminism to explore the ways in which gender, race/ethnicity, and class intersect in the construction of historically and culturally specific feminisms.

- Description
- This book explains the high level of current concern for the under-representation of women in politics. It explores the reasons behind recent favourable attitudes towards sharing political power with women in the Netherlands, and in other European countries. It identifies the many obstacles and strategies and it points out future expectations about the representation of women in Europe. Under which circumstances can political players be influenced to change institutions and procedures in favour of newcomers to politics. The current ‘crisis of politics’ opens a window of opportunity for changing the underlying male-biased structures.

- Description
- ‘Good governance’ became the mantra in international development debates in the 1990s with state reform and ‘improving’ public administration epitomising key approaches to achieving good governance. But were these approaches sufficient to make governance participatory, accountable and responsive to citizens and respectful of their rights? .In contrast to dominant views of governance as a series of technical interventions to improve state functioning, this book looks at governance as political process. It investigates how women among marginalised groups can stake their claim to participation in governance, and create accountability of governance institutions to their interests and rights. .The book is based on action research undertaken in eight country contexts across two regions, Southern Africa and South Asia, by sixteen civil society organisations. It provides insights into the changing role of civil society organisations representing women’s interests in facilitating ‘voice’ of the most marginalised women, and in developing strategies, methods and tools to bring poor women’s voices to governance institutions in order to ensure responsiveness in policy formulation and implementation.

- Description
- This dissertation studies state feminism in a non-western nation state. This volume focuses on the activities and roles of the Women's Bureau of the Ministry of Labour in post-World War II Japan. While state feminism theory possesses a strong capability to examine state-society relationships in terms of feminist policymaking, it tends to neglect a state's activity in improving women's status and rights in non-western nations where the feminist movements are apathetic or antagonistic to the state and where the state also creates a vertical relationship with feminist groups.
