- Description
- Talking back and acting out is a collection of writing by women who actively negotiate, reconstruct, and re-imagine their identities in opposition to dominant cultural constructions. The collection explores individual women's refusal to be reduced to hegemonic constructions, prescribed identities, and limited possibilities. The essays highlight stories of women who push the boundaries of what it means to be a woman in this multicultural, yet white supremacist, society.

- Description
- 'No more separate spheres!' explores the limitations of thinking about nineteenth-century American culture within the narrow rubric of 'male public' and 'female private' spheres. This collection examines the ways that the separate spheres binary has malingered unexamined in feminist criticism, American literary studies, and debates on the public sphere. Using American literary studies as a way to talk about changing categories of analysis, these essays discuss the work of major authors as Catharine Sedgwick, Herman Melville, Pauline E. Hopkins, Frederick Douglass, Catherine Beecher, Ralph Waldo Emerson, W.E.B. Du Bois, Sarah Orne Jewett, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and María Ampara Ruiz de Burton.

- The contributors offer views on a wide range of issues that confront the modern woman, including self-defense, sexual freedom, economic well-being and employment, the promise of technology, and the place of traditional values, including the family. This new feminism, for example, asserts the rights of self defense, defends reproductive rights, and it argues that every woman's choices and expressions of self-ownership must be equally and legally respected.

- Description
- The contributors to this volume examine the increasing influence of women on Congress and the ways in which gender defines and shapes Congress as a political institution. The volume follows women on the campaign trail, in committee rooms, in floor debate, and in policy deliberations where previously the focus was on men's interests and activities. The essays are complemented by a gallery of photographs showing notable women from their earliest years of involvement with Congress to the present.
