- Description
- This book presents an interdisciplinary approach to an aspect of Gothic texts, films, and music: that of rewriting. From the eighteenth-century Gothic novel to present-day vampire films and Goth music, the genre is characterised by its nostalgic reflection on past worlds, narratives, and identities. Gothic nostalgia is often accompanied by a transgressive drive, resulting in perversions of the rewritten past—the modern vampire is no longer embodied evil but an attractive dandy, while Goth subcultures reflect on Victorian aesthetics but pervert them by adding fetishist elements. This book brings together the early Gothic novel, present-day female and black Gothic literature, Goth subculture and music, and the imagery of horror films and comic books, thus broadening the definition of ‘Gothic’ from a literary genre to a gesture of pervasive cultural criticism.

- Description
- Collection of essays on cinematic motherhood. This publication explores this widespread cultural fascination with motherhood through analyses of mothers in contemporary U.S. film, including both mainstream and independent cinematic representations. The contributors draw on a variety of critical approaches to consider the spectacle of pregnancy, mother-daughter relationships, mothers as predators, narcissists, and absent victims, and the ways in which cultural anxieties are displaced and projected onto marginalized mothers in films such as 'Fargo', 'Transamerica', 'Gas, Food, Lodging', 'Ordinary People', and Scream.

- Description
- State of present knowledge on (homo)sexuality in African literature and film. The contributors describe the need to separate sex from gender, the correlation between gender and sex as categories of human identities, and between gender and creative artistic practices. They look at characterization, textual and filmic structure and plot in terms of identification. The contributors examine among others: the prevailing views on gender and sexuality, differences of viewpoint between literature and film, the evolution of human sexuality throughout African history, and the role of genre and race.

- Description
- The author examines the production and reception of so called 'problem films', for example movies about race and miscegenation, beginning with 1947’s Gentleman’s Agreement and Pinky (1949). She also describes the arrival of the Method school of acting in Hollywood, which demanded that performers inhabit their characters’ lives. She describes how these developments reflected and helped popularize the concept of the liberal citizen in postwar America. She argues that the reception of projected identities offer new perspectives on contemporary identity politics, from feminism to the gay rights movement.

- Description
- In the early part of the twentieth century, migrants made their way from rural homes to cities in record numbers and many traveled west. Los Angeles became a destination. Women flocked to the growing town to join the film industry as workers and spectators, creating a 'New Woman.' Their efforts transformed filmmaking from a marginal business to a cosmopolitan, glamorous, and bohemian one. By 1920, Los Angeles had become the only western city where women outnumbered men. This book explores these relatively unknown new western women and their role in the development of Los Angeles and the nascent film industry. From Mary Pickford's rise to become perhaps the most powerful woman of her age, to the racist moral panics of the post-World War I years that culminated in Hollywood's first sex scandal, Hallett describes how the path through early Hollywood presaged the struggles over modern gender roles that animated the century to come.

- Description
- This book examines the intersections between debates in critical studies of men and masculinities and debates on visual representation, investigating representations of men and masculinities in contemporary culture and examples of visual art that deconstruct those representations. It attends to various spaces associated with heteronormativity, including the visible domains of working life, leisure and public discourses, as well as less visible domains such as private spaces, lifestyle, desire and sexual agency.

- Description
- This study places African American women's stardom in historical contexts by examining the star personae of five African American women: Dorothy Dandridge, Pam Grier, Whoopi Goldberg, Oprah Winfrey, and Halle Berry. Interpreting each woman's celebrity as predicated on a brand of charismatic authority, Mask shows how these female stars have ultimately complicated the conventional discursive practices through which blackness and womanhood have been represented in commercial cinema, independent film, and network television. She considers Dandridge's status as a sexual commodity in films such as Tamango, revealing the contradictory discourses regarding race and sexuality in segregation-era American culture. Grier's feminist-camp performances in sexploitation pictures Women in Cages and The Big Doll House highlight a similar tension between representing African American women as both objectified stereotypes and powerful, self-defining icons. Mask reads Goldberg's transforming habits in Sister Act and The Associate as representative of her unruly comedic routines, while Winfrey's daily television performance as self-made, self-help guru echoes narratives of success. Finally, Mask analyzes Berry's success by acknowledging the ways in which Dandridge's career made Berry's possible.
