- Description
- This volume describes the sentiments and sexual mores that lead parents to kill their unborn daughters. The contributors explore how reproductive technologies are misused at the family, community and state levels. They highlight both the participation and denial of various authorities dealing with reproduction, health services and female foeticide. Their engagement with the state is analysed in the context of colonial policies, the adoption law, family planning programmes and the Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PNDT) Act of 1994 and its amendment in 2002. .

- Description
- Feminism is concerned with the historical, social and political meanings of sexual difference in the human body, and the spectrum of experiences those meanings produce. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, gendered forms of violence persist, abortion remains a political issue, reproductive and cosmetic technologies and their concomitant ethical questions are proliferating, and the presence of women’s bodies in public spaces and for public consumption produces a range of anxieties about women’s well-being and the common good. In this publication feminist scholars from across the disciplines grapple with these issues.

- Description
- More than a decade ago, three world conferences placed the human rights of women on the international agenda. The first, in Vienna, officially extended the definition of human rights to include a woman's right to self-determination and equality. A year later, in Cairo, this concept was elaborated to deal explicitly with issues of sexuality and procreation. Subsequently, at a conference in Beijing, the international community committed to a wide range of practical interventions to advance women's sexual, social, political, and economic rights. Nowadays terrorism and 'the war' against it, the HIV/AIDS pandemic, the incursion of religious fundamentalism into governments, and the U.S. government's retreat from the international agenda on sexual and reproductive rights have raised questions about the direction of policy implementations. This collection brings together essays that examine the practical and theoretical issues of sexual and reproductive health policy and implementation.

- Description
- The authors survey population policies from key countries on five continents to provide a global perspective. Regardless of the type of government or its cultural history, many of these countries have developed similar policies to control their populations and attempt to combat social problems such as poverty and hunger. However, the common denominator is that states have used women's bodies as a political resource. This book illustrates how countries have developed their strategies in response to goals driven by the United Nations and the United States. Due to fears of a post-World War II 'population bomb' and uncertainty of how to deal with the world's poor after the Cold War, the U.S. and the Soviet Union led the charge among nations to devise strategies to control their populations, but in different ways. The U.S. and some European countries pressed the poor and ethnic minorities to limit reproduction. China's 'one child' policy targeted all ranks of society, while Soviet women were under surveillance through state-planned services such as medical care and commodity distribution to detect pregnancy.
