This book analyses the extent to which women have been pioneers and mobilizers of social transformation in China. It considers how ideas of women's roles changed, as China has transformed from state socialism to engagement with capitalist globalization. It examines the increasing awareness of women's gender and sexuality and social movements for women's rights. It also discusses women's roles in society-state interactions, including cultural events and social activism.
