- Description
- This book contributes to current dialogues that construct Black Feminist Theory as critical engagement within dominant American institutions that oppress women of color in their daily lives. Women of color face social challenges that exist at the intersections of race, gender, class, and sexual orientation. While some challenges are common to women of color, others reflect the distinct journey each woman makes as she negotiates her identity within her family, professional circle, social and romantic relationships, and community.

- Description
- Nowadays, pioneering women are taking their places in formal and informal military structures previously reserved for, and assumed appropriate only for men. Laura Sjoberg explores how gender matters in war-making and war-fighting today. Drawing on a range of examples from conflicts around the world, she shows that both women and men play many more diverse roles in wars than either media or scholarly accounts convey.

- While serving in UN peacekeeping missions, some peacekeepers sexually exploit and abuse the local population. This book analyzes factors which may increase the risk of such behavior as well as measures the UN has taken which may have decreased the number of incidents. The three risk factors found are an environment of sexual violence in the mission’s host country, the presence of internally displaced persons close to the mission, and a lack of supervised or regulated contact with the local population. In turn, the presence of an office whose purpose is to collect reports and investigate allegations, training on preventing sexual exploitation for the incoming peacekeepers, and campaigns to empower the local population on these issues all seem to reduce the risk of sexual exploitation and abuse occurring.

- Description
- Ideas of masculinity and femininity become sharply defined in war-reliant societies, resulting in a presumed enmity between men and women. This so-called 'battle of the sexes' is intensified by the use of misogyny to encourage men and boys to conform to the demands of masculinity. Drawing on cross-cultural comparisons and examples from popular media, including sports culture, the rise of 'gonzo' and 'bangbus' pornography, and 'internet trolls,' Digby describes how the hatred of women and the suppression of empathy are used to define masculinity, thereby undermining relations between women and men--sometimes even to the extent of violence. Digby identifies cultural elements that contribute to heterosexual antagonism, such as an enduring faith in male force to solve problems, the glorification of violent men who suppress caring emotions, the devaluation of men's physical and emotional lives, an imaginary gender binary, male privilege premised on the subordination of women, and the use of misogyny to encourage masculine behavior. He finds the link between war and gender to be dissolving in many societies: war is becoming slowly de-gendered, and gender is becoming slowly de-militarized.

- Description
- By examining twenty-four NATO member states, this book argues that civilian policymakers and military leadership no longer surrender to parochial gendered division of the roles, but rather support integration to meet the recruitment numbers due to military modernization, professionalization and technological advancements. Moreover, it proposes that increased pressure by the United Nations to integrate gender into security and NATO seeking standardization and consistency on the international level, and women’s movements on the domestic level, are contributing to greater gender integration in the military.
