- Film audiences have grown used to seeing female characters in 'performance roles,' But queer women in film perform on yet another level. In addition to performing their gender for the world, they also perform their sexuality for either a general or an 'insider' audience, in ways that can be read to establish a queer visibility, to establish a sense of community, or to show romantic lesbian interest. This book examines 'performance spaces' for lesbian identities in films, evaluating how queer femaleness is signified in contemporary cinema. It studies five films in particular: When Night Is Falling, Better Than Chocolate, Tipping the Velvet, Slaves to the Underground, and Prey for Rock and Roll. The book reveals much about both the story worlds of the films and the ways that queer women react to and feel about them.

- Description
- Like other forms of 'chick culture,' which the editors define as a group of mostly American and British popular culture media forms focused primarily on twenty- to thirtysomething, middle-class—and frequently college-educated—women, chick flicks have been accused of reinscribing traditional attitudes and reactionary roles for women. On the other hand, they have been embraced as pleasurable and potentially liberating entertainments, assisting women in negotiating the challenges of contemporary life. This volume consists of 11 essays, prefaced by an introduction situating chick flicks within the larger context of chick culture as well as women’s cinema. The essays consider chick flicks from a variety of angles, touching on issues of film history, female sexuality (heterosexual and homosexual), femininity, female friendship, age, race, ethnicity, class, consumerism, spectatorship, pleasure and gender definition.

- Description
- This book explores the queerness of cinema spectatorship, arguing that cinema spectatorship represents a unique encounter of desire, pleasure and perversion beyond dialectics of subject/object and image/meaning. Through a variety of cinematic examples, including abstract film, extreme films and films which offer examples of perverse sexuality and corporeal reconfiguration, the book encourages a radical shift to spectatorship as itself inherently queer beyond what is watched and who watches. Film as its own form of philosophy invokes spectatorship thought as an ethics of desire.

- Description
- Gender roles have been tested, challenged, and redefined everywhere during the past thirty years, but perhaps nowhere more dramatically than in film. This book is an introduction to the representations of masculinity, femininity, and places once thought to be 'in between.' The book begins with a general introduction that traces the movement of gender theory from the margins of film studies to its center. The ten essays that follow address a range of topics, including screen stars: depictions of gay, straight, queer, and transgender subjects: and the relationship between gender and genre.
