- Description
- Gender-based violence affects every society in the world, and represents a significant impediment to development. Anyone can be a victim of violence on the grounds of their gender identity, but it is predominantly women and girls whose lives are limited by its effects. This volume explores the wide variety of forms that gender-based violence can take, including violence that occurs within marriage, during fuel collection and forced evictions, and at school, and the impact that this violence can have on the capacity of victims to support themselves and enjoy their full rights as human beings. The authors also present examples of successful policy, ranging from lobbying for better legal and police protection for victims, to working with men and boys to combat the underlying gender stereotypes and expectations which legitimize gender-based violence against women.

- Description
- From the female soldiers involved in Abu Ghraib to Palestinian women suicide bombers, women and their bodies have become powerful weapons in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. In Women as Weapons of War, Kelly Oliver reveals how the media and the administration frequently use metaphors of weaponry to describe women and female sexuality and forge a deliberate link between notions of vulnerability and images of violence. Focusing specifically on the U.S. campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq, Oliver analyzes contemporary discourse surrounding women, sex, and gender and the use of women to justify America's decision to go to war. For example, the administration's call to liberate 'women of cover,' suggesting a woman's right to bare arms is a sign of freedom and progress. .Oliver also considers what forms of cultural meaning, or lack of meaning, could cause both the guiltlessness demonstrated by female soldiers at Abu Ghraib and the profound commitment to death made by suicide bombers. She examines the pleasure taken in violence and the passion for death exhibited by these women and what kind of contexts created them. In conclusion, Oliver diagnoses our cultural fascination with sex, violence, and death and its relationship with live news coverage and embedded reporting, which naturalizes horrific events and stymies critical reflection. This process, she argues, further compromises the borders between fantasy and reality, fueling a kind of paranoid patriotism that results in extreme forms of violence.

- Description
- This book is based on Atreyee Sen's immersion into the low-income, working-class slums of Bombay, tells the story of the women and children of the Shiv Sena, one of the most radical and violent of the Hindu nationalist parties that dominated Indian politics throughout the 90s and into the present. The Sena women's front has been instrumental in creating and sustaining communal violence, directed primarily against their Muslim neighbors. The author presents the Sena women's own rationale for organizing themselves along paramilitary lines, as poor women and children have used violence and 'gang-ism' to create a distinctive social identity, networks of material support, and protection from male violence in the explosive environment of the slums.
