- Description
- This volume explores the ways 19th- and 20th-century Americans scrapbooked, turning photographs, magazine ads, love notes and recipes into albums that fashioned identities and preserved memories. The authors examine scrapbooks by an African-American musician, a Depression-era teen, a Wild West prostitute, South Carolina plantation ladies and countless children (including the young Willa Cather). In the 19th century, teachers and parents embraced scrapbooking as a wholesome pastime that would teach children to be frugal and productive. Scrapbooking wasn't an exclusively female pursuit. Ott argues that men often scrapbooked as part of their professional lives and examines male physicians' scrapbooks. The history of this hobby is bound up with the march of consumer capitalism: making scrapbooks was a way to refine and display one's taste, and mass-produced scrapbooks were the products of an industrial economy.

- Description
- This book breaks new ground in visual studies by exploring the visual dimensions of gender. Comprising a series of contributions from different continents, the book helps readers to move beyond consideration of gender as a social construct, towards an understanding of the visual constructions of gender. Chapters explore the ways in which the visual shapes meaning, with material ranging from documentary film footage of liberated concentration camps after World War II, contemporary fashion photography in Tehran, to a queer art exhibition with overtones of a nineteenth-century archive. The book is organised thematically under the headings of documenting, trafficking and experimenting. They focus mainly on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, covering not only Europe and North America but also Argentina, Iran and southern Africa. A diverse selection of exceptional and provocative images accompanies the text.

- Description
- This collection brings together eleven essays--eight previously published and three new--that document the evolving relationship between academic feminism and political feminism as Freedman has studied and lived it. .Following an introduction that presents a map of the personal and intellectual trajectory of Freedman's work, the first section of essays, on the origins and strategies of women's activism in U.S. history, reiterates the importance of valuing women in a society that has long devalued their contributions. The second section, on the maintenance of sexual boundaries, explores the malleability of both sexual identities and sexual politics. Underlying the collection is an inquiry into the changing meanings of gender, sexuality, and politics during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries along with a concern for applying the insights of women's history broadly, from the classroom to the courthouse

- Description
- This book presents a dialogue between Western and Middle Eastern women that is often presumed never to have happened. Not only were women from the Middle East imagined to be shut up in a harem all day without access to education, ideas or the outside world, but the extent to which Western women travellers were able to engage with women in the regions they visited has often been overlooked. This collection provides extracts from Ottoman, Egyptian and British and American writers – each with a biographical and literary introduction – that trace the development of an intellectual, personal and critical dialogue between women over a period of accelerated social change marked by Arab nationalism and Egypt’s move to independence, and the establishment of the Turkish Republic at the end of the Ottoman Empire.
