- Description
- This book engages current scholarship on women in Texas, the South, and the United States. It provides insights into Texas’s geographic position, bordering on the West and sharing a history with Mexico, while analyzing the ways in which Texas stories mirror a larger American narrative. The biographies and essays illustrate a diversity among Texas women, reflecting experiences ranging from those of dispossessed enslaved women to wealthy patrons of the arts. That history also captures the ways in which women’s lives reflect both personal autonomy and opportunities to engage in the public sphere.

- Description
- This collection of essays in an autobiographical framework spans the period from 1963 to the present. It encompasses Gerda Lerner's theoretical writing and her organizational work in transforming the history profession and in establishing women's history as a mainstream field. Six of the twelve essays are new, written especially for this volume. Several essays discuss feminist teaching and the problem of interpretation of autobiography and memory for the reader and the historian. The essays illuminate how her personal life affected the questions she addressed as a historian, and how the social and political struggles in chich she engaged informed her thinking. In the appendices: Biographies of Midwestern feminist leaders: and Class syllabus for Workshop on the construction of Deviant Out-Groups.

- Description
- The second wave of feminism which challenged and changed many assumptions about the world in which we live was a product of various western cultures, with no single country possessing a monopoly on the writing of the texts that became the canonical statements of the 'new' feminism. Though many of the contributions to feminist scholarship that went on to become internationally significant hailed from Europe and the United States, these works were often formed within the context of local debates and framed within traditions of feminism and other political engagements specific to these nations.

- Description
- O'Beirne takes the feminist movement to task, charging it with responsibility for assorted social ills from broken families to increased risk to the military with female recruits. She cites some of America's best-known feminists, including Hillary Clinton, Gloria Steinem, Maureen Dowd, Kate Michelman, and Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Despite defeat of the ERA, these women, and the feminist movement in general, have managed to influence American culture to the detriment of women. O'Beirne maintains that advancements for women should not be credited to the women's movement but to intrepid women--including Catholic school nuns--who were hard at work breaking down barriers without celebration or official causes behind them. O'Beirne catalogs all the ways that feminism has weakened families, coarsened culture, and burdened the government.
