- Description
- In this book the author travels to Armenia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and India to follow the trade in women s bodies and efforts to stop it. What she finds is a counter-trafficking system at the mercy of funds from misguided international organizations and foreign governments. From counterproductive restrictions placed on NGOs by donors, to jaded employees and bribes given to prosecutors, Dewey highlights the structural flaws in place that allow, and sometimes even help, sex trafficking to continue. She discovers how a global problem plays on differently on the local level and why millions of aid dollars make little difference in the lives of women who are forced or compelled from their homes into the global sex trade.

- Description
- This book is an ethnography of class dynamics and the subject formation of migrant domestic workers. Based on interviews with young women who migrated from China's Anhui province to the city of Beijing to undertake domestic service for middle-class families Hairong explores what these migrant domestic workers mean to the families that hire them, to urban economies, to rural provinces such as Anhui, and to the Chinese state. Above all, Yan focuses on the domestic worker's self-conceptions, desires, and struggles. Yan analyzes how the migrant women workers are subjected to, make sense of, and reflect on a range of state and neoliberal discourses about development, modernity, consumption, self-worth, quality, and individual and collective longing and struggle. She offers insight into the workers' desire and efforts to achieve quality through self-improvement, the way the workers are treated by their employers, and representations of migrant domestic workers on television and the Internet and in newspapers and magazines.

- Description
- This book argues that the question to be asked is, 'What cannot be done about trafficking in women?' Exploring the complex relationship between security, subjectivity and politics, Aradau argues that security practices reproduce a politics of unfreedom and inequality. Politics out of security, on the contrary, is formulated around universality, equality and freedom. In the situation of trafficking, the equality and universality of work disrupt the specification of difference and of particularized subjectivity upon which security practices rely. Aradau emphasizes that the reduction of politics to security limits struggles for equality and freedom and entrenches divisions and boundaries in the world.
