- Description
- In a career that spanned over forty years, Ella Hepworth Dixon (1857-1932) was alternately journalist, critic, essayist, short story writer, novelist, editor of a women's magazine, dramatist, and autobiographer. After an initial popularity, however, Ella Hepworth Dixon's work, like that of the majority of her contemporaries, remained largely unread for decades. In this study, Valerie Fehlbaum sheds light on Dixon's life and work, and provides insight not only into Dixon herself but into the multifaceted character of the 'New Woman' writer that Dixon typified. .The figure of the New Woman as representing new-found intellectual, social, and political freedom came to the fore towards the end of the nineteenth century when the term 'woman' was being interrogated on every imaginable level. In heated debates about woman's nature, primary questions such as 'what is a woman?' and 'what does a woman want?' were accompanied by subsidiary controversies about the precise role she should play in society. Fehlbaum's re-evaluation of Dixon's varied literary output enhances our understanding of this period of radical change for women, and shows that Ella Hepworth Dixon's writing remains as lively and pertinent today as it was when it was first published.

- Description
- Briggs concentrates on Woolf's paradigm-altering work, and on Woolf's fascination with the workings of the mind. Briggs tracks the creation of each book, beginning with Woolf's first novel, The Voyage Out, published in 1915 when she was 33, and concluding with Between the Acts (1941). By lacing her supple, revelatory readings of each book with relevant, judiciously analyzed biographical information, Briggs creates a vital portrait of a perfectionist who endured 'rewriting madness,' a questing woman who relished life when she was free of the depression that stalked her, and a visionary determined to combat misogyny and invent a new type of novel that would 'give the feeling of the vast tumult of life.'

- Viola Florence Barnes was an instrumental member of the 'imperial school' of historians, who interpreted North American colonial history within a British imperial framework. Reid examines Barnes's life as a female historian, providing a glimpse into the gendered experience of professional academia in that area. The author also examines the imperial school, which had yielded results that were crucial to the study of North American colonial history.

- Description
- This anthology, a sequel to the first volume covering the early twentieth century, includes a variety of literary, personal, and journalistic responses to the tumultuous history of mid-twentieth-century China. Selections by Chinese women writers of the twentieth century reflect the intellectual and aesthetic diversity of women's writing from the period. Thise Chinese women writers offer riveting accounts of contemporary historical conditions, comic depictions of twentieth-century urban life, and modernist works of fiction. Biographical information on twelve writers - including Yang Gang, Bai Wei, Hu Lanqi, Yang Jiang, Zong Pu, and Chen Ruoxi - and Dooling's introduction provide understanding of the role of women's writing in Chinese literary modernity.
