The discursive contestations between conservative biomedical, religous and political leaders on the one hand and feminist, gay an lesbian rights activists and human rights defenders on the other, centres around the definition of what is 'normal' gender, a 'normally' sexed body and 'normal' sex. The views of those concerned hardly seem to matter. Author discusses the medical, legal and cultural-religious discourses around three cases.
