- Description

- Description
- The focus in this volume is on Dutch racism with revelations of illuminating insight in the two closely related questions that organize this volume: what factors contribute to the complexity of Dutch racism and why is the concept of racism so intensely contested? One of the key features of Dutch racism is its denial. The tendency to reject colonial history as relevant for understanding contemporary sexually offensive representations of black women is not new. The volume is divided into three chapters: 1. Narratives and legacies of Dutch Racism 2. Bladk bodies, white fantasms 3.Normalizing racism, resisting humiliations 4. Dutch situations: reflections from visitors and other keen observers With among others the following articles: - Diving into the wreck: exploring intersections of sexuality, 'race', gender, and class in the Dutch cultural archive / Gloria Wekker - Harmless identities: representations of racial consciousness amog three generations Indo-Europeans / Esther Captain - The enuncation of the nation: notes on colonial refractions in the Netherlands / Joseph D. - Description
- This book is about knowledge of racism, where that knowledge comes from, what it contains and how it can be used in politics, education, media, museums, health care, technology, community work organizations. It gives insight into the way in which racism is institutionally anchored, what the connection looks like between system and everyday practices and between micro and macro dimensions of racism. The book gives an in-depth look at the theory of everyday racism as a power conflict and process. It is based on interviews with higher educated black women in the Netherlands and in California, United States.

- Description
- Scientific terminology and problem definitions are not neutral. They imply a political perspective. While there is ample evidence that white racism is a structural problem in Europeanized societies, Dutch dominant sociology still lacks a conceptual understanding of racism. The view is supported that Dutch race and ethnic relations studies should include the critical perspectives of black and migrant people in support of a sociology that takes a clear stand against racism.
