- Description
- Information about the number of mothers in prison in Great Britain is not routinely collected by the Prison Service. Instead, information is obtained by conducting surveys of female prisoners, concentrating in particular on questioning those who are mothers. The results of a 1994 survey are summarised here.

- Description
- Although domestic violence is now a recognised problem amongst the Asian community living in Britain, as it is among other groups, there is some lack of understanding on the part of the relevant statutory and voluntary agencies about the specific cultural concerns surrounding the issue. This has resulted in an inadequate service being offered to Asian women experiencing domestic violence. This was a small scale exploratory study drawing on the experience of only 14 Pakistani women who had suffered domestic violence. Although the findings highlight particular cultural difficulties faced by these women, it is not possible to generalise from a sample of this size and the research was concerned only with the nature of the problem, not its extent.

- Authors look whether sex differences in sentencing statistics simply a reflection of differences in current and previous offending or something more. The results of this large-scale study suggest that sentencers treat women differently from men, sometimes by avoiding the use of custody, but, more markedly, in their reluctance to impose fines.
