- Description
- This paper explores the trend of sexual violence against women that emerged in Pakistan with the introduction of the Islamization process through the implementation of the Sharia laws since 1979. The focal pont is rape and the state legislation that governs it, namely the Zina Hudood Ordinance and the Law of Evidence, and how the gender-discriminatory nature of these laws serves as a powerful weapon in the hands of the patriarchal society of Pakistan to suppress women. These laws and their rigid interpretation in the name of Islam have not only furthered oppression and sexual violence against women to an alarming degree in Pakistan, but also seriously destroyed women's chances of equal justice. The factors that led to the implementation and survival of such laws in the first place, and consequently how rape became a intimidating weapon against women, are discussed. The paper examines the various political, social, cultural and religous factors that contribute to this situation, and the legal and social complexities involved for women in seeking justice in rape cases. In conclusion Pakistani women's initiative in evolving and building an organized resistance and struggle for the cancellation of gender discriminatory laws are discussed.

- Description
- This paper deals with the discourse of the rights of Muslim women in the preindependence period with particular reference to the Shariat Act 1937 and the Muslim Marriage Dissolution Act 1939 and the socio-historical and political background in the enactment of these Acts. Author tried to put throughout this paper these two acts to be seen more of maintaining community identity and showing numerical strength for political gains than protecting the rights of Muslim women. To this end, author tried to capture various debates that took place among the legislators in the assembly, women’s organizations, social reformers, community leaders and so on with regard to application of Sharia. The paper is based on information collected from secondary sources, and analysis is more from a gender rights perspective with a historical and political background.

- Description
- 'This paper asks whether—and if so, how—Islamic groups such as Hamas that clearly define themselves outside a feminist framework can be studied in terms of women’s empowerment. The material discussed is based on fieldwork conducted with Hamas-affiliated female Islamists, as well as women’s rights activists in general, in the occupied Palestinian territories in 2007. Centrally, this work debates whether it is possible to think of women’s empowerment in non-feminist terms.'

- Description
- Authors want to contribute to the debate on whether countries with large Muslim populations, like for instance Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, Indonesia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey, will embrace gender equality. The role of women in Islamic societies is still a highly charged political and cultural issue. Women’s issues are vital in the shaping of modern debates on democracy in predominantly Muslim countries. Examined were attitudes towards women’s equality by analyzing Muslims’ responses, looking at the effects of country, education, socio-economic status, age, income, religiosity and other variables. Some of the preliminary findings suggest that across the seven nations surveyed, broad majorities support gender equality but women are generally more likely to endorse equality than men.

- 'It can be hardly disputed that woman’s status and rights in Islam in family and society is one of the most controversial topics in Islam. One of the important reasons behind this controversy seems to be the diverse interpretations of the Islamic texts which Muslim scholars offer on various issues of woman. This article deals with this issue.'
