- Description
- This publication reveals the stories of female perpetrators of sexual violence and their place in wartime conflict, legal policy, and the punishment of sexual violence. More broadly, the author asks, what do the actions and perceptions of female perpetrators of sexual violence reveal about our broader conceptions of war, violence, sexual assault, and gender? This book explores specific historical case studies, such as Nazi Germany, Serbia, the contemporary case of ISIS, and others, to understand how and why women participate in rape during war and conflict.

- Description
- In this work, David Raub Snyder offers an investigation into the German army’s prosecution and punishment of sex offenders during the Second World War. In so doing, Snyder restores balance to the literature regarding the military administration of justice under Hitler and to the historiography of sexuality and the Third Reich. Although scholars have devoted considerable attention to military offenses, the literature is largely silent about crimes punishable under civilian law. In many cases, the Wehrmacht’s response to rape, sexual assault, homosexual “offenses,” child molestation, incest, “racial defilement,” and bestiality often depended on the willingness of the offender to continue to bear arms for his country. Snyder notes that, contrary to conventional wisdom, soldiers on the eastern front often received severe punishments for sexual assaults on Soviet civilians. He demonstrates how military expedience and military justice became entangled and conflicted during the war.

- Description
- In this book, Henry asks questions about the relationship between mass rape, politics and law. In what ways does law contribute to the collective memory of wartime rape? How do ‘counter-memories’ of victims compete with the denialism of wartime rape? The text specifically analyses the historical silencing of rape throughout international legal history and the potential of law to restore these silenced histories, it also examines the violence of law and the obstacles to individual and collective redemption. Tracing the prosecution of rape crimes within contemporary courts, Henry seeks to argue that politics underscores the way rape is dealt with by the international community in the aftermath of armed conflict.

- This book examines the gender justice design features of the Rome Statute (the foundation of the International Criminal Court), and assessing the effectiveness of the statute's implementation in the first decade of the court's operation. Chappell argues that although the ICC has provided mixed outcomes for gender justice, there have also been a number of important breakthroughs, particularly in regards to support for female judges.

- Description
- Every year, hundreds of thousands of women become victims of sexual violence in conflict zones around the world: in the Democratic Republic of Congo alone, approximately 1,100 rapes are reported each month. .This book offers an analysis of the causes and responses to sexual violence in contemporary armed conflict. It explores the function of wartime sexual violence and examines the conditions that make women most vulnerable to these acts both before, during and after conflict. To understand the motivations of the men who perpetrate this violence, the book analyzes the role played by systemic and situational factors such as patriarchy and militarized masculinity. Difficult questions are tackled: in particular, the case of child soldiers, who often suffer a double victimization when forced to commit sexual atrocities. The book concludes by looking at strategies of prevention as well as new programs being set up on the ground to support the rehabilitation of survivors and their communities. Sexual violence in war has long been a taboo subject but new steps are at last being taken at both local and international level - to end what has been called the “greatest silence in history”.

- Description
- Rape has long been a part of war, and recent conflicts in Bosnia, Rwanda, and Darfur demonstrate that it may be becoming an even more integral strategy of modern warfare. The incidence and consequences of rape in the Vietnam War ( 1961- 1975 ) have been largely overlooked. Using testimony, oral accounts, literature, and film, this book focuses on the rape and sexual abuse of Vietnamese women by U.S. soldiers during the Vietnam War, and argues that the erasure and elision of these practices of sexual violence in the U.S. popular imagination perpetuate the violent masculinity central to contemporary U.S. military culture. The recognition of this violence is important not just for an accurate historical record, but also to understand the Vietnam veteran’s trauma, which often stems from his aggression rather than his victimization.
