- Description
- Violent extremism has a gender dimension that produces disproportionate effects on women. It forms a leading challenge to realizing sustainable peace globally. This research volume focuses on the relation between gender identity and violent extremism in South and South-East Asia. The first chapter analyzes militarized masculinities in the southern Philippines to illustrate how notions of masculinity and femininity operate in local settings and how they are linked to notions of violence. The second chapter examines how gender identities are portrayed in the myths and stories of violent extremist groups from Indonesia and the Philippines. In the third contribution, the author explores the relationship between violent extremism and domestic violence against women, through interviews with communities in rural Bangladesh. The final chapter examines the relationship between gender inequality, sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) and the presence of terrorist groups.

- Description
- This book explores women’s relationship with terrorism, with a keen eye on the political, gender, racial, and cultural dynamics of the contemporary world. Throughout most of the twentieth century, it was rare to hear about women terrorists. In the new millennium, however, women have increasingly taken active roles in carrying out suicide bombings, hijacking airplanes, and taking hostages in such places as Palestine, Iraq, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Lebanon, and Chechnya. The first section of this volume offers an overview of women’s participation in and relationships with contemporary terrorism, and a historical chapter traces their involvement in the politics and conflicts of Islamic societies. The next section includes analysis of terrorist movements in Chechnya, Kashmir, Palestine, and Sri Lanka. The third section turns to women’s involvement in al Qaeda and includes critical interrogations of the gendered media and the scholarly presentations of those women.

The book focuses on women from a broad range of ethnicities, classes, religions, and regions. With a signature of Ellen Dubois

- Description
- 9/11 is not simple a date on the calendar but marks a distinct historical threshold, ushering in the war on terror and a supposed “clash of civilizations. Perhaps no date, since Virginia Woolf declared that “on or about December 1910 human character changed,” has marked such a singular point in the perception of time, identity and nature. Women’s writing has always been something of a counter-canon, offering modes of voice and point of view beyond that of the “man” of reason. This collection of essays explores the two problems of what it means to write as a woman and what it means to write in the twenty-first century.

- Description
- The hijab is arguably the most discussed item of women's clothing today. It has become the primary global symbol of female Muslim identity for Muslims and non-Muslims alike, Nowhere has the debate been more complex than in France. In this book the author provides a riveting account of the controversial 2004 French law to ban Islamic headscarves and other religious signs from public schools. While much has been written on the subject, Winter offers a feminist perspective, carefully delineating its political and cultural aspects. Drawing on both scholarly literature and popular commentary, she examines the headscarf debate from its inception in 1989 through fluctuations in its intensity in public consciousness over the 1990s to its surging significance in the wake of 9/11 and the consequent shift in global politics. Winter argues that the issue must be understood within the specific historical and cultural context of France and through a feminist lens, since gender is fundamental to the debate about veiling .
