- Description
- Susan Arndt enters the debate about feminism by attempting to discuss and define the nature of African feminism and African-feminist literatures. Taking into account African-feminist literatures’ heterogeneity as well, she uses a classification model to discuss it. Arndt distinguishes three main currents of feminism: reformist, transformative and radical African-feminist literatures. The workability of this classification model is put to the test, illustrated, and exemplified with interpretations of selected African-feminist prose texts by African women writers of different regional, religious and generational backgrounds: Grace Ogot, Ifeoma Okoye, Flora Nwapa, Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo, Mariama Bâ, Buchi Emecheta, Bessie Head, Pat Ngurukie, Nawal El Saadawi and Calixthe Beyala

- The contributors to this volume examine the increasing influence of women on Congress and the ways in which gender defines and shapes Congress as a political institution. The volume follows women on the campaign trail, in committee rooms, in floor debate, and in policy deliberations where previously the focus was on men's interests and activities. The essays are complemented by a gallery of photographs showing notable women from their earliest years of involvement with Congress to the present.

- Description
- Amy E. Butler provides a portrait of two of the major adversaries in the 1920s' battle over equal rights legislation for women in the United States-Alice Paul and Ethel M. Smith. While they shared the goal of full political and legal equality for women, they differed on how best to achieve it. Paul, the author of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) and leader of the National Woman's Party, fought to establish that women were the same as men under the law. Smith, legislative secretary of the National Women's Trade Union League and a recognized leader of the opposition to the ERA, believed the ERA did not adequately consider the impact of class and economic differences in women's lives Smith and Paul's conflict is a story of the relationship between personal politics, collective action, and the intersection of law and culture on the social construction of gender. Comparing their perspectives on equality creates a new understanding of the people and issues at stake in the ERA debate
