- Description
- This book reconsiders a reliance on the criminal justice system for solving women’s struggles with domestic violence: acknowledge how militarism subjects women to extreme levels of violence perpetrated from within, and without, their communities: recognize how the medical establishment inflicts violence—such as involuntary sterilization and inadequate health care—on women of color: devise new strategies for cross-cultural dialogue, theorizing and alliance building. .INCITE! Women of Color Against Violence was born in 2000, when more than two thousand activists from diverse communities came together to end the war being waged on women of color in the US and around the world. Now the largest multiracial, grassroots, feminist organization in the United States, INCITE! boasts chapters in more than 20 cities.

- Description
- In traditional historical and scholarly accounts of the making and fighting of wars, women are often nowhere to be seen. War stories are told as if men were the only ones who plan, fight, are injured by, and negotiate ends to wars. As this book tells, women can be found at every turn in the (gendered) phenomena of war. Women have participated in the making, fighting, and concluding of wars throughout history, and their participation is only increasing at the turn of the 21st century. Women experience war in multiple ways: as soldiers, as fighters, as civilians, as caregivers, as sex workers, as sexual slaves, refugees and internally displaced persons, as anti-war activists, as community peace-builders, and more.

- Description
- An estimated 35 million people worldwide are displaced by conflict, and most of them are women and children. During their time away from their homes and communities, these women and their children are subjected to a horrifying array of misfortune, including privations of every kind, sexual assaults, disease, imprisonment, unwanted pregnancies, severe psychological trauma, and, upon return or resettlement, social disapproval and isolation. .This collection brings these problems - and potential solutions - into sharp focus. Based on field research and a broad knowledge of other studies of the challenges facing women who are forced from their homes and homelands by conflict, this book offers understanding and problem-solving ideas.

- Description
- In this volume, human rights advocates and scholars argue that the memory of trauma is gendered and that women's voices and perspectives are key to our understanding of the dynamics that emerge in the context of genocidal violence. The genocides of modern history such as Rwanda, Armenia, the Holocaust and their effects have been well documented, but how do the experiences of female victims and perpetrators differ from those of men? Examined is how women consistently are targets for the sexualized violence that serves as an instrument of ethnic cleansing, how female perpetrators take advantage of the new power structures, and how women are involved in the struggle for justice in post-genocidal contexts. By focusing on women, the book helps to understand the relationship between misogyny and violence in societies where genocide erupts.

- Description
- This book explores the cultural understanding of actors, agents and structures of war and how can we make sense of attitudes towards women, agency and war today. Ahall argues that all types of stories are informed by ideas about motherhood and maternal reproduction as the foundation of sexual difference. This does not only mean that women are judged based on the shape of their, maternalised, bodies, rather than what they actually do, but, it means that ideas about motherhood function to police contemporary gender norms and contemporary understandings of agency in war. This book argues that maternalist war stories function to reiterate traditional heteronormative gender roles. The body politics of war told through maternalist war stories is a process in which the sexing of war means the policing of gender borders, with motherhood acting as the border agent.

- According to the results of this report, 63% of the women were found to have suffered some form of sexual torture experiences also reported. The report also describes the medical and mental health consequences of armed conflict. Indeed, it reports that 69% of the women interviewed during this study reported a gynaecological complaint. In the case of medical problems that were documented as a result of the conflict, 43% of the 643 respondents interviewed for this study had clinically significant mental health problems, 12% were addicted to alcohol, 15% had attempted suicide and 61% had a surgical complaint. This report once again goes to show the immense task before us to deal with the medical and mental health consequences of armed conflict and more specifically the sexual and gender-based violence. This will require the commitment and involvement of not only the government of Liberia and its people, but also the support of international partners.

- Description
- Two interconnected issues in the matrix of gender, war and militarism are looked at from a feminist perspective: the impacts of war and militarism on people (especially but not limited to women) and the gendered construction of war and militarism, linked to systems of power and inequality based on race, class, nation and so on.
