- Description
- Images of 'good mothers' saturate the media, yet so too do images of mothers who do not fit this mold. Numerous scholars have addressed 'bad mothers' in the media, arguing that these images are a necessary counterpoint that serves to buttress the 'good mother' myth. The authors in this volume explore how images of mothers have expanded beyond the good/bad dichotomy, simultaneously and sometimes paradoxically serving to reinforce, fracture, and/or transcend the ideology of good motherhood. Contents: Sara E. Hayden / Heather L. Hundley: Challenging the motherhood myth: Suzy D’Enbeau / Patrice M. Buzzanell: Counter-intensive mothering: exploring transgressive portrayals and transcendence on ‘Mad Men’: Elizabeth Fish Hatfield: Motherhood and mental health: Carrie Mathison’s Homeland pregnancy: Katherine J. - This volume focuses on the work of exiled women writers and journalists as well as on gendered representations in the writing of both male and female exiled writers. The contributions are in English or German. The seventeen contributions set out to both celebrate and critically examine the concepts of gender and sexuality in exile in a wide range of texts by well-known and lesser known authors, and throw light on many different aspects of gendered authorship and gendered relations. The volume also looks at two bibliographic rarities: exile newspapers intended for and directed at a female readership. Table of contents: “Exemplary Lives”? - Description
- Collection of essays highlighting female heroes during the Holocaust and sculptures about them, made by American feminist artist Linda Stein. The book tells the story of Stein’s traveling exhibition and educational initiatives in the United States, celebrating ten female heroes such as Anne Frank, Ruth Gruber and Vitka Kempner. In Stein's study of the Holocaust, she found that while many people were recognized for their courage, less attention was placed on the women who made a difference. With her art, she provokes questions and dialogue about power and vulnerability through a lens of gender. https://www.haveartwilltravel.org/events/holocaust-heroes
