- Description
- This book provides an overview of the gender rules encountered in Europe in the period between approximately 500 and 1500 C.E. The essays speak to how best to uncover the experiences of ordinary people from archives formed mainly by and about elite males, and how to combine social histories of lived experiences with cultural histories of gendered discourses and identities. The collection focuses on Western Europe in the Middle Ages but offers some consideration of medieval Islam and Byzantium.

- Description
- Within the gender studies binaries like female versus male and gay versus straight have been problematized as a symbol of the stigmatization and erasure of non-normative subjects and practices. This volume offers different perspectives on both these binaries and other dichotomies that penetrate the gendered and sexual lives of speakers. Several chapters focus on the limiting or misleading qualities of analyses of binaries, while others suggest that binaries are a crucial component of social meaning within particular communities of study. The book advocates for a re-theorization of the binary that provides more complex and contextually-grounded engagement with speakers' own orientations to dichotomous systems. Finally, it is argued that researchers must be careful to avoid the assumption that our own preconceptions about binary social structures will be shared by the communities we study.

- Description
- This volume combines theory and practice to provide an introduction to contemporary feminist and sexuality research. It demonstrates how the notion of gender has been criticized by various theories pertaining to masculinity, feminism and sexuality. It also illustrates how the ordering system of gender has been troubled or overcome in practice: in queer performance, legal critique, the classroom and textual analysis.

- This volume focuses on the work of exiled women writers and journalists as well as on gendered representations in the writing of both male and female exiled writers. The contributions are in English or German. The seventeen contributions set out to both celebrate and critically examine the concepts of gender and sexuality in exile in a wide range of texts by well-known and lesser known authors, and throw light on many different aspects of gendered authorship and gendered relations. The volume also looks at two bibliographic rarities: exile newspapers intended for and directed at a female readership. Table of contents: “Exemplary Lives”? Thoughts on Exile, Gender and Exile Writing / Katharina Prager: Gender and Kindertransport Memoirs / Andrea Hammel: Anna Seghers und die Moderne: Positionen aus der Expressionismusdebatte und den großen Exilromanen / Christine Ujma: Masculinity and Femininity in Anna Seghers’ and Bodo Uhse’s Mexican Exile Narratives / Trinidad Marín Villora: Carl und Alice Zuckmayer in Vermont: A Gendered Perspective / Birgit Maier-Katkin: Die Suche nach dem Ort: Veza Canettis Erzählung „Toogoods oder das Licht“ / Rosa Marta Gómez Pato: „Man wird, was man war erst ganz in der Emigration“: Veza und Elias Canetti in der Emigration in England ? - Description
- This book offers insights into the set of relations which exist between gender, sex, sexualities and the media, and in doing so, showcases new research at the forefront of media and communication practice and theory. The articles move beyond associating gender with man/woman and instead considers the relationship between the construction of gender norms, biological sex and the mediation of sex and sexuality. Essay topics range from the continuing sexism of TV advertising to ways in which the internet is facilitating the (re)invention of our sexual selves.

- Description
- This book focuses on the gendered dimensions of reality television. Through close readings of a wide range of reality programming, from Sister Wives to Ghost Adventures and Deadliest Warrior, the contributors think through questions of femininity and masculinity, as they relate to the intersections of gender, race, class, and sexuality. They connect the genre's combination of real people and surreal experiences, of authenticity and artifice, to the production of identity and norms of citizenship, the commodification of selfhood, and the naturalization of regimes of power. Whether portrayals of hoarders, or big-family programs such as 19 Kids and Counting, the contributors analyze reality television as a relevant site for the production and performance of gender.

- Description
- This book engages scholarly essays, poems, and creative writings that examine the meanings of race, gender, and sexual orientation as interlocking systems of oppression. Each chapter in this volume critically interrogates the notion of identity as socially constructed, yet interconnected and shaped by cultural associations. The shaping of an individual’s identity, communication, and worldview can be read, shaped, and understood through life, art, popular culture, mass media, and cross-cultural interactions, among other things.

- Description
- This volume sets out to investigate queer literature and cinema, exploring in particular the intersection of issues of gender and Lusophone culture. The essays collected here present individual case studies within a queer theoretical framework, examining the ways in which queer identities are constructed and addressed through different types of cultural production. More specifically, they consider Portuguese and Lusophone socio-cultural contexts and the representation of gender in popular culture, as well as the centrality of literature and cinema in the subversion of heteronormative social norms.
