- Description
- This book discusses the shifting perceptions of female beauty, concentrating on the period from about 1540 to 1940. It begins with the Renaissance, when a renewed emphasis on the individual was reflected in the celebration of beauty in the portraits of the day. The fluid, sensual lines of the Baroque period initiated a shift toward a more 'natural' look, giving way in the 18th century to a more stylized and artificial face, a mask of ideal beauty. By the late 19th century, commercial beauty preparations had become more readily available, leading to new technological developments within the beauty industry in the early 20th century. Beauty salons and the wider availability of cosmetics revolutionized the way women saw themselves.

- Description
- Special consideration in this volume is given to gender issues arising during periods when upheaval challenged colonial regimes, which often resulted in decolonization and independence. Chapters also reveal how former colonies transitioned into ‘nations,’ along with transnational dynamics that took place among modern states. A common thread woven through each article is the matter of precisely who it was that deserved to be treated and recognized as fully human in an era of imperial exchanges and ongoing capitalist globalization. Authors describe hemes as labour, commodities, fashion, mobility, and activism while exploring the dynamics of empire in destinations ranging from Africa and the Americas to Europe and Asia. .Originally published as Gender & History Volume 26 Issue 3

- Description
- Collection of articles about the history of Victorian fashion in Britain of the nineteenth century. This book brings together sources that trace the evolution of dress and the social, cultural and political discourses that influenced Victorian fashion. Each section presents a sample of writings and images connected to one of the seven themes: fashion theory, dress reform, crinolines and corsets, men's dress, occasional dress, production and industry and international influences. It combines primary texts by authors such as Oscar Wilde and Sarah Stickney Ellis and illustrations with explanatory notes to offer an overview of the period for both students and researchers. Also analysed are interdisciplinary fields including gender studies and literature. .

- Description
- Elisabeth Wilson tells stories of the artists, intellectuals, radicals, and hangers-on who populated the salons, bars, and cafés of Paris, London, Berlin, New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco since the early nineteenth century. The book is a quest for the many shifting notions of bohemianism that give rise to debate about the role of art and artists. She explores the role of sex and erotic love, the role of women in Bohemia, the bohemian search for eccentricity and excess, and the politics of many bohemians. Many examples are given, amongst others: Djuna Barnes, Suzanne Valadon, Josephine Baker, Nancy Cunard, Andy Warhol, Juliette Greco, Allen Ginsberg, and Marianne Faithfull. Examples of politics: lesbianism, feminism, mysticism, and marxism
