This UN policy brief focuses on the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on gender equality and women's rights. It looks at four thematic areas: economy, health, unpaid care work and gender-based violence. .The economic impacts of the pandemic are especially felt by women and girls who are earning and saving less, having insecure jobs or living near to poverty. The health of women is impacted by the reallocation of resources and priorities, including sexual and reproductive health services. The report states that unpaid care work, mainly performed by women, has increased with children staying at home and older persons who need more help. Besides, as a consequence of the 'lockdown' many women experience domestic violence. Suggestions for national policies imply including women and women’s organizations in all COVID-19 decision making processes, realizing an inclusive care economy and designing socio-economic plans with focus on women and girls.
