- Description
- The aim of this course is to explore and discuss various ways of articulating and affirming the voice as a powerful agency of social change. The voice is theorized as women’s existence, women’s theory and women’s art. Voice can be silenced and silence itself: it can be absent and multiple, a feminist scream and artistic expression, noise and excitement, oppressed and revolutionary, a voice of the Other and a voice in favour of Otherness, a voice of women’s subversion and transformation. All of them express feminist concerns and are also an expression of feminist concerns. Beyond Derrida’s idea of phonocentrism, the course pays atention to “politics of the voice” in its fulfilment. Feminist voice challenges the responsibility of the diversity of voices in their multiplicities.

- Description
- The aim of this collection of essays is to explore how classical myth has been central to the development of feminist thought. In the past feminist criticism has focused on psychoanalytical reinterpretation of specific myths. A famous example is Hélène Cixous's 'Laugh of the Medusa'. Contributors to this book state that psychoanalysis is only one of the fields that contribute to the development of feminist thought. Others are politics, philosophy, historiography, history, theory of science, and poetry. Among the writers and thinkers whose ideas on myth and feminism are discussed in the book we find: Wittig, Cixous, Irigaray, Lacan, Butler, and Haraway.

- Description
- Judith Butler has been the most important gender theorist of the the late twentieth century. This volume draws leading political theorists into dialogue with her political theory. The book is divided into five sections which reflect the interdisciplinary nature of Butler's work and activism. The first part explores Butler’s relationship to the discipline of philosophy, considering her work in light of its philosophical contributions. Butler and subjectivity covers the vexed question of subjectivity with which Butler has engaged throughout her published history. The part on gender considers the most problematic area, gender, taken by many to be primary to Butler’s work. The part on democracy engages with Butler’s significant contribution to the literature of radical democracy and to the central political issues faced by our post-cold war. The last part focuses on action. It looks at the question of political agency and political action in Butler’s work.

- Description
- This work postulates a new relationship between Carl Jung and Luce Irigaray. Several connections are developed between the philosophical and psychological work of both thinkers. Gray argues that there is a relationship between them that can be thought of in terms of Hegel's Master/Slave dialectic. She suggests that Irigaray's conception of the feminine is a critical re-visioning of the open-ended possibilities for human beings expressed in Jung's idea of individuation. Other subjects discussed in this book are: mimesis, essentialism, and the divine.

- Description
- This book offers a detailed analysis of Beauvoir's concepts of freedom and recognition concerning their impact on a philosophy of gender. It demonstrates that Beauvoir is much more than a simple equality feminist and that she posed questions that are at the center of contemporary feminist research. It shows that Beauvoir's existentialist approach must be taken seriously in that it provides a fundamental instrument for the interpretation of gender relations. On the basis of her work the conflicts are revealed that arise when modern emancipation theories and post-modern deconstructivism clash. By investigating these conflicting tendencies the thesis is elaborated that Beauvoirs's work can be seen as a pivot between modern and post-modern discourse.

Arendt takes the position of the pariah in different roles: as a Jewess, a woman and an intellectual.
