- Description
- This part memoir and part musical biography of the American singer and drummer Karen Carpenter (1950-1983) documents why the Carpenter's seemingly white-washed music about 'normal love' have significance to the author, people of colour, immigrants, LGBTIQ and others. Tongson interweaves the story of her namesake’s rise to fame in the 1960's and '70s with the trans-Pacific journey of herself and her musicians family between her native Philippines - where imitations of American pop styles flourished - and Carpenter's Southern California, and between notions of romance and queer desires.

- Description
- Based on interview data with music industry professionals and theoretical frameworks from sociology, mass communication and marketing the author explores gender differences female artists experience and the manufactoring of female pop stars. She argues that the focus on the female pop star’s body as her core asset has resigned many women to being 'short term brands', positioned to earn as much money as possible before burning out or aging ungracefully.

- Description
- Patti Smith (1946-) and Robert Mapplethorpe (1946-1989) found each other on the streets of New York City in the late '60s and made a pact to keep each other afloat until they found their voices--or the world was ready to hear them. Lovers first and then friends as Mapplethorpe discovered he was gay. Mapplethorpe was quicker to find his metier, with a Polaroid and then a Hasselblad, but Smith was the first to fame, transformed from a poet into a rock star. Mapplethorpe soon became famous too before his death from AIDS in 1989. Smith's memoir of their friendship, Just Kids, is open-eyed with the oracular style familiar from her anthems like 'Because the Night,' 'Gloria,' and 'Dancing Barefoot' balanced by her powers of observation and memory for everyday details .
