- Description
- This study examines how cross-dressers and transsexuals are represented in three different film genres - comedies, thrillers and mixed genre productions - focussing on examples such as Some Like It Hot, Tootsie, Mrs Doubtfire, Victor/Victoria, Psycho, Dressed to Kill, Silence of the Lambs,The Crying Game and Boys Don't Cry. It also includes a chapter on 'shemale' Internet pornography. Relying on psychoanalytic, queer and other post-modern theories, the author describes the influence of these cultural representations in the context of an increasingly, problematic distinction between the worlds of the imagination and reality, demonstrating the interdependency of our perceptions of transgender and its culturally constructed images.

- Description
- The early 19th century was a period of acute transition in operatic tradition and style, when time-honored practices gave way to the developing aesthetics of Romanticism, the rise of the tenor overtook the falling stars of the castrati, and the heroic, the masculine, and the feminine were profoundly reconfigured. These transformations resounded in operatic plot structures as well: the happy resolution of the 18th century twisted into a tragic 19th-century finale with the death of the helpless and innocent heroine—and frequently her tenor hero along with her. Female voices which formerly had sung en travesti, or basically in male drag, opposite their female character counterparts then took on roles of the second woman, a companion and foil to the death-bound heroine rather than her romantic partner. In Voicing Gender, Naomi André skillfully traces the development of female characters in these first decades of the century, weaving in and around these changes in voicings and plot lines, to define an emergent legacy in operatic roles.

- Description
- Amid the religious tumult of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, English scholars and preachers debated tales concerning Pope Joan, a ninth-century woman who, as legend has it, cross-dressed her way to the papacy only to have her imposture exposed when she gave birth during a solemn procession. The legend concerning a popess had first taken written form in the thirteenth century and for several hundred years was more or less accepted. The Reformation polarized discussions of the legend, pitting Catholics, who denied the story’s veracity, against Protestants, who suspected a cover-up and instantly cited Joan as evidence of papal depravity. In this heated environment, writers reimagined Joan variously as a sorceress, a hermaphrodite, and even a noteworthy author. This book examines sixteenth- and seventeenth-century debates concerning the popess’s existence, uncovering the disputants’ historiographic methods, rules of evidence, rhetorical devices, and assumptions concerning what is probable and possible for women and transvestites.

- Description
- This publication takes note of a proliferation of phallic feminine figures in disparate North American and European texts from the end of the nineteenth century onward. Brooks takes up the textual figure of the phallic woman where Freud locates it, in the imagined mother that the little boy, in fantasy, credits with a penis of her own. It traces this phallic-woman motif backward to the sexological case study, and forward to newspaper accounts of testosterone-taking third-sexers. Brooks examines both high and low literature, pornography, postmodern theory, and writing that would seem to answer Lacan's injunction to move 'beyond the phallus'.
