- Description
- Drawing on primary fieldwork, this work offers a cross-cultural study of transvestitism through an examination of transvestites in Britain and the Hijras of India. The author tackles questions like: Is transvestitism motivated primarily by sex or gender? How does culture shape notions of sexuality and gender? Why are transvestites in the West often seen as 'deviant' or 'perverse,' while they are accepted in other societies? What are the implications for the categories of 'male' and 'female' when considering transvestism? She also pays attention to the importance of dress and the artefactual nature of the construction of the self through clothing.

- Description
- In the wake of the revolutionary wars, the figure of the cross-dressed woman proliferated in novels, plays, popular tales, and real-life accounts that circulated throughout Germany. Elisabeth Krimmer explores this challenge by tracing the motif of cross-dressing in novels and plays by eighteenth-century German writers.

- Description
- This volume explores the links between changing notions of gender and sexuality and changes in the London theatre, by describing: the introduction of new social types (the female undergraduate and the 'effeminate' male aesthete): the career and influence of Oscar Wilde: cross-dressing and gender confusion, for example: Sarah Bernhardt's Prince Hamlet, Charley's Aunt, J. M. Barrie's Peter Pan, the music hall turns of Vesta Tilley. It also highlights how playwrights such as G. B. Shaw and Elizabeth Robins used the stage as a platform for debate over women's suffrage, marriage, models of masculinity, and the rights of working women.
