- Description
- Book about the impact of grassroots community activism on social change in the post-World War II New York City. It demonstrates the ability of grassroots community activism to bridge racial and cultural differences and effect social change. As illustration, the book shows the transformation of the antipoverty organization by poor people in the 1960s and the participation of working-class ethnic women in feminist activism in the 1970s. It also considers the collaboration of gay men and feminists resulting in a supportive community for AIDS victims, in order to improve health care and oppose homophobia and misogyny during the 1980s and 1990s. Concluded is that social policies that encourage political mobilization of marginalized groups are effective in solving social problems and realizing democracy.
