- Description
- Aggressive criminal justice intervention in cases of wife abuse, characterized in particular by mandatory charging and no-drop prosecutorial policies, is frequently held out as offering two broad promises to women: protection for individual women experiencing wife abuse: and the transformation of the norms which currently sustain men's violence against women. The authors argue that not only has aggressive criminal justice intervention failed thus far to deliver on these promises but that it is, by its very nature, incapable of doing so. While its inability to do so is related to many factors which are discussed in the paper, perhapes the most significant is the multitude of harms that aggressive criminal justice intervention brings in tow for women, particularly those who are socially and economically marginalized.

- Description
- The reconstruction of both the killing and the marital history of a Turkish Muslim couple is illustrative of the cultural discourse on violence against women (VAW) among Muslim minorities that is currently evolving in a multi-cultural society that is facing increasingly discriminatory attitudes towards Muslims. Stereotypical images of “culturally” based violence are growing in popularity and contribute to the discursive construction of Muslim minorities as particularly violent, especially towards women, and notably as more violent than the native Dutch. This paper critically addresses how this tendency is playing out in Dutch research.

- Description
- Although domestic violence is now a recognised problem amongst the Asian community living in Britain, as it is among other groups, there is some lack of understanding on the part of the relevant statutory and voluntary agencies about the specific cultural concerns surrounding the issue. This has resulted in an inadequate service being offered to Asian women experiencing domestic violence. This was a small scale exploratory study drawing on the experience of only 14 Pakistani women who had suffered domestic violence. Although the findings highlight particular cultural difficulties faced by these women, it is not possible to generalise from a sample of this size and the research was concerned only with the nature of the problem, not its extent.
