Over the last decade, many Indonesian women became involved in political activism, establishing independent groups dedicated to issues of gender equality and human rights. These women's groups, some of which are overtly feminist, were a crucial part of the reformasi movement that ended Suharto's thirty year dictatorship in 1998. Rinaldo wishes to elaborate on the connections between the older state-controlled women's organizations and contemporary women's activism.
