- Description
- The author discusses from a South African perspective the ways in which feminist politics have been dissolved in the post-1980s era as to make feminism look anachronistic. The focus of this article is in a concept in which patriarchy adapts a form that emerges out of the relative success in the socio-economic sphere of the post-war feminist movements in the Western world which gave middle-class women suffrage, reproductive rights, the space in which to critique misogynist and patriarchal cultural and media production, and many other gains. Harris wants to open the debate as how feminist politics may be revived.

- Description
- This paper explores the trend of sexual violence against women that emerged in Pakistan with the introduction of the Islamization process through the implementation of the Sharia laws since 1979. The focal pont is rape and the state legislation that governs it, namely the Zina Hudood Ordinance and the Law of Evidence, and how the gender-discriminatory nature of these laws serves as a powerful weapon in the hands of the patriarchal society of Pakistan to suppress women. These laws and their rigid interpretation in the name of Islam have not only furthered oppression and sexual violence against women to an alarming degree in Pakistan, but also seriously destroyed women's chances of equal justice. The factors that led to the implementation and survival of such laws in the first place, and consequently how rape became a intimidating weapon against women, are discussed. The paper examines the various political, social, cultural and religous factors that contribute to this situation, and the legal and social complexities involved for women in seeking justice in rape cases. In conclusion Pakistani women's initiative in evolving and building an organized resistance and struggle for the cancellation of gender discriminatory laws are discussed.

- Description
- The author intends to expand on the theme of developing 'our listening capacity, to be sure that we hear everything' in an attempt to avoid perpetuating the stereotype of the passive, victimized Third World woman whose only hope of liberation is through the consciousness raising and activist efforts of Western feminists. Much of the current writing on human rights and women's rights in North Africa and the Middle East suggests that world-wide endorsement of such principles and platforms is most likely to be successful if the people to whom they apply feel a sense of ownership in their creation.

- Description
- This research studies the women's movement and changes in women's status in China. The first part of the paper reviews the history of the women's movement in China and relevant theoretical perspectives on gender stratification. The second part examines empirical and secondary data to demonstrate the transformations of women's status in China. The final section examines some conclusions emerging from the data. The findings show that the change of women's status, measured in terms of income, occupation and education, over the last fifty years has been unstable and inconsistent. Although China has been tremendously successful in achieving gender equality, women still suffer a lower status compared with men.

- Description
- This paper deals with the discourse of the rights of Muslim women in the preindependence period with particular reference to the Shariat Act 1937 and the Muslim Marriage Dissolution Act 1939 and the socio-historical and political background in the enactment of these Acts. Author tried to put throughout this paper these two acts to be seen more of maintaining community identity and showing numerical strength for political gains than protecting the rights of Muslim women. To this end, author tried to capture various debates that took place among the legislators in the assembly, women’s organizations, social reformers, community leaders and so on with regard to application of Sharia. The paper is based on information collected from secondary sources, and analysis is more from a gender rights perspective with a historical and political background.

- Description
- 'This paper asks whether—and if so, how—Islamic groups such as Hamas that clearly define themselves outside a feminist framework can be studied in terms of women’s empowerment. The material discussed is based on fieldwork conducted with Hamas-affiliated female Islamists, as well as women’s rights activists in general, in the occupied Palestinian territories in 2007. Centrally, this work debates whether it is possible to think of women’s empowerment in non-feminist terms.'
