Author tries to locate an analysis of state feminism in South Africa in order to assess the effectiveness of the National Machinery for Women in South Africa. First she undertakes a theoretical analysis of citizenship and the state. Then she moves on to a discussion of the results of an empirical analysis of the effectiveness of the National Machinery for Women in South Africa.
