- Description
- The days when combating sexually transmitted diseases (STD's) was seen as equivalent to combating prostitution are long gone, but sex workers (and, to a lesser extent, their clients) are still often considered in need of special attention in the context of STD prevention. Everywhere, the advent of AIDS has given a new spirit to preventive interventions targeted at sex workers, the measures being either repressive, investigative or supportive. This chapter deals with the research and policy directed at sex workers and their clients in the Netherlands 'since AIDS'. The discussion is limited to heterosexual sex work. First it starts with a description of sex work in the Netherlands: its legal and social status, the different forms and the people involved. Next, a consideration of studies of sex workers and clients on issues related to HIV with a discussion on prevention activities, aimed at sex workers and their clients, that have been conducted during the last decade. Finally, attention is paid to the question of what needs to be done in terms of sex worker policy and preventive activities in the future.
