- This is the story of five women who dared to enter the male-dominated world of twentieth-century abstract painting not as muses but as artists. Lee Krasner, Elaine de Kooning, Grace Hartigan , Joan Mitchell and Helen Frankenthaler changed American art and society, tearing up the prevailing social code and replacing it with a doctrine of liberation.

- Description
- This study of the work of the Jewish German artist Charlotte Salomon (1917-1943) sheds light on the combination of image, text and music, revealing her references to cinema, opera, Berlin cabaret, and the painter's deployed modernist engagements with artists such as Van Gogh, Munch and Kollwitz. Additionally, the author draws attention to affinities in Salomon's work with that of others who shared her experience of statelessness and menaced exile in Nazi-dominated Europe, including Hannah Arendt, Sigmund Freud, and Walter Benjamin.
