- Frida Kahlo remains one of the most popular artists of our time. One of the most memorable aspects of her persona and creative oeuvre is her wardrobe. In this book 95 original photographs of Kahlo's newly restored clothing are paired with historic photos of the artist wearing them and her paintings in which the garments appear. Frida's life and style were an integral part of her art, and she is long overdue for recognition as a fashion icon.

- In 1973 Georgia O'Keeffe employed C. S. Merrill to catalog her library for her estate. Merrill, a poet who was a graduate student at the University of New Mexico, was twenty-six years old and O'Keeffe was eighty-five, almost blind, but still painting. Over seven years, Merrill was called upon for secretarial assistance, cooking, and personal care for the artist. Merrill's journals reveal details of the daily life of a genius. The author describes how O'Keeffe stretched the canvas for her twenty-six-foot cloud painting and reports on O'Keeffe's favorite classical music and preferred performers. Merrill provided descriptions of nature when she and the artist went for walks: she read to O'Keeffe from her favorite books and helped keep her space in meticulous order.

- Description
- Forced to become self-supporting by financial panics and civil war, thousands of young women moved to New York City between 1850 and 1880 to pursue careers as professional artists. At the Cooper Union School of Design for Women they were imbued with the Unity of Art ideas, an aestetic ideology that made no distinction between fine and applied arts or male and female abilities. The women became painters, designers, engravers, colorists, and art teachers. What their letters, documents, and artwork reveal is that for one brief generation women could realize their potentials as artists. This book recovers that moment. The book also tells the story of how art is used to create, alter, and justify a nation's political economy. It is women artists' chronicle of both the liberating and the destructive effects of capitalist production in a democratic society.

- Berthe Morisot (1841–1895) was one of only a handful of women who exhibited both at the famed Paris Salon and with the French Impressionists. Her work depicts the world of the Parisian bourgeoisie: their clothes, their life-styles, their surroundings, and their relationships. Over one hundred full-color paintings, graphic works, watercolors, and pastels are reproduced in this volume, and are accompanied by original commentaries that follow the artist's career from her training with Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot to her final work. Included in the volume is an essay that Morisot wrote about her nephew-in-law Paul Valéry in 1948—a seminal text that has never been included in his collected works—as well as extensive correspondence and sketchbooks held at the Musée Marmottan Monet, which have rarely been accessible.

- Mamas of Dada focuses on the lives and works of six female supporters of the Dada movement: Emmy Hennings, Gabrielle Buffet, Germaine Everling, Céline Arnauld, Juliette Roche, and Hannah Höch. Kamenish selected these women for their avant-garde pursuits in the chief centers of Dada's rebellious activity and because they left behind a written record of their involvement with the movement, which was short lived--from 1916 to 1924--but widespread geographically.

- With lips slightly parted and eyes fixed on a point in the distance, a breathtaking marble portrait of Costanza Piccolomini appears alive. Carved by Gianlorenzo Bernini in 1636–37 for his own pleasure, the portrait of Costanza is one of his most captivating works, but until now little has been known about its subject. For centuries Costanza was identified only as Bernini's mistress, who later incited his rage by betraying him for his brother. McPhee corrects this story in her biography of a sculpture and its subject. This book sets the bust and Costanza's own life against the backdrop of Baroque Rome.

- Description
- First published in 2018. This book is published on the occasion of the exhibition on the Swedish painter Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) titled 'Hilma af Klint: paintings for the future' in Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, United States, from October 12, 2018 to April, 23, 2019. Within the arc of her production from naturalistic work in the 1890s to watercolours in the 1940s, the book and exhibition focuses on the period 1906-1920. Hilma af Klint created a body of work known as 'The paintings for the temple' that broke from the dominant painting style and are primarily abstract. Her early arrival at abstraction - before modernists as Vasily Kandinsky and Piet Mondriaan - is a radical effort to find visual expression for a transcendent, spiritual reality beyond the observable world. Contains:

- Description
- Bringing together a range of theoretical and historical sources, from architecture and design, communication and media, to gender and sexuality studies, Jasmine Rault shows that Gray shared with many of her female contemporaries a commitment to designing spaces for sexually dissident modernity. This volume examines Gray's early lacquer work and Romaine Brooks' earliest nude paintings: Gray's first built house, E.1027, in relation to Radclyffe Hall and her novel 'The Well of Loneliness': and Gray's private house, Tempe a Pailla, with Djuna Barnes' 'Nightwood'. While both female sexual dissidence and modernist architecture were reduced to rigid identities through mass media, women such as Gray, Brooks, Hall and Barnes resisted the clarity of such identities with non-communicative aesthetics. Rault demonstrates that by defying the modern imperative to publicity, clarity and identity, Gray helped design a sapphic modernity that cultivated the dynamism of uncertain bodies and unfixed pleasures, which depended on staying in rather than coming out.

- Description

- Describes how Alfred Stieglitz's search for a pure, essential 'woman in art' led him to several women before his vision found ultimate expression in Georgia O’Keeffe, whom Stieglitz portrayed as the shining, liberated feminine figure of his movement. The author portrays women who were affiliated with the Stieglitz circle, namely Gertrude Käsebier, Pamela Colman Smith, Anne Brigman, and Katharine Nash Rhoades. She argues how these artists helped define the woman modernist through their lives and their individual photographs and paintings. This publication accompanied an exhibition at the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum in fall 2007.

- Description
- The French-American sculptor Louise Bourgeois (1911-2010) was one of the most important artists of the last century. Her fleshy blobs, skeletal spiders and the aggressive fragility of her work offered a new solution to the antagonism between the figurative and the abstract that had previously been part and parcel of modernism. Bourgeois herself provided a unique interpretive level to modern art through the uses she made of childhood trauma, family life and sexuality. This study serves as both an introduction to the central themes of the late artist's oeuvre and as a commemoration of her one-hundredth birthday. Over the course of nine chapters, it examines her life, her exploration of the works of other artists and the transformation of her emotions into such works of art as the now iconic pieces 'Destruction of the Father,' 'Fillette,' 'Cells' and 'Maman.'

- Description
- This study of the work of the Jewish German artist Charlotte Salomon (1917-1943) sheds light on the combination of image, text and music, revealing her references to cinema, opera, Berlin cabaret, and the painter's deployed modernist engagements with artists such as Van Gogh, Munch and Kollwitz. Additionally, the author draws attention to affinities in Salomon's work with that of others who shared her experience of statelessness and menaced exile in Nazi-dominated Europe, including Hannah Arendt, Sigmund Freud, and Walter Benjamin.

- Description
- Sorkin focuses on three Americans who promoted ceramics as an advanced artistic medium: Marguerite Wildenhain, a Bauhaus-trained potter and writer: Mary Caroline (M. C.) Richards, who renounced formalism at Black Mountain College to pursue new performative methods: and Susan Peterson, best known for her live throwing demonstrations on public television. Together, these women pioneered a hands-on teaching style and led educational and therapeutic activities for war veterans, students, the elderly, and many others.
